Missouri's 1950s highway markers, on the maps of their own eras

In 1951 the State Historical Society of Missouri and the State Highway Commission began placing two-sided history markers in highway turnouts and roadside parks across the state, and from 1955 to 1960 the Society's own journal printed the inscriptions, ninety-nine markers in all by the Society's own count. Seventy-eight of them now have permanent pages at TreeAlive, placing the Society's 1950s text on georeferenced maps from the periods each marker commemorates. These pages carry the record as the Review printed it, not the wording or placement of the signs today.

What a Missouri family sees

TreeAlive maps family trees. When a visitor's ancestors lived in Missouri, the markers standing near those places surface automatically alongside their family's journey:

Arrow Rock · near where a family farmed in Saline County in the 1850s · the 1834 tavern built for travelers on the Santa Fe Trail, in the state park at the edge of the old town

A marker stops being a roadside plaque and becomes a destination with a personal reason to visit. Open the live demo tree, choose the Crossings tab, and turn on Historical Markers to see the experience working (the demo family’s markers are in Pennsylvania; a Missouri family sees Missouri’s).

QR-ready, from day one

Every marker page has print-ready QR artwork. A scan at the sign opens the marker's page on the period map, no app to install. The artwork files are available to the society and its sign vendors; TreeAlive does no printing or installation.

Marker page links are permanent: identifiers are never reassigned, so a code printed today resolves for good.
