One mile east of this point, just north of the mouth of Warroad River stood a post of the American Fur Company, built about 1820. The French explorer, La Verendrye and his party probably visited this region in 1732 enroute to build Fort St. Charles in the present Northwest Angle.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
