Lake Traverse Fur Post
A few hundred yards north of the inflow of the Mississippi, near this point, in 1832 stood the Lake Traverse wintering post of the American Fur Company under the charge of John H. Fairbanks, clerk for William A. Aitkin of Sandy Lake. The lake was later renamed Bemidji after the Chippewa chief of that name.
Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
