Old Crossing Treaty
At the "Old Crossing" or ford of the Red Lake River on the Pembina Trail about 7 miles north of this point, the Red Lake and Pembina bands of Chippewa in treaty council on October 2, 1863 ceded to the United States virtually all their lands in the Red River Valley.
Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
