Death of Little Crow
On July 3, 1863, Little Crow, leader of the Sioux Outbreak of 1862, and his son Wowinapa while on a horse stealing raid were surprised by two armed settlers, Nathan and Chauncy Lamson one half mile west of here. In the firing Little Crow was killed and Nathan Lamson slightly wounded. The site is marked.
Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
