This town, laid out in June 1855, by Martin McLeod, Colonel John H. Stevens, and others, became the county seat of McLeod County. During the Sioux Outbreak of 1862 the town was heavily fortified and garrisoned, as many as four companies being stationed there during the winter of 1862-63.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
