About 300 feet north of this point stood the pioneer log cabin of Samuel White. There, on September 22, 1862, Samuel and his wife Laura and two children, Susan and Otis, were brutally murdered by a small party of Sioux Indians during the Outbreak. The bodies were subsequently interred at Glencoe.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
