Inkpaduta Massacre
March 26, 1857, an outlaw Sioux band under Inkpaduta, moving north from Lake Okoboji region of Iowa where it has murdered some thirty persons, attacked this town, then called Springfield. Seven settlers were killed, but a spirited defense beat off the Indians and saved the community. A State monument stands in this park.
Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
