Fort Fairmont

Martin County · U. S. highway 16 · location approximate

Directions to the area ↗

Known also as Chain of Lakes post, was a substantial log stockade on the present Martin County courthouse grounds. It was built in September 1862 for defense against the Sioux and was garrisoned by volunteers and troops of the 25th Wisconsin. A tablet marks the site.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
