On the hill above the east bank of the river about a half a mile from here, stood the Des Moines River post, a log stockade erected in the late spring of 1864 by troops of the second Minnesota Cavalry as one of the frontier forts during the Sioux Outbreak. It was garrisoned until the summer of 1865.
