Combined American forces under Captains Charles D. Burass and Bluford K. Thompson clashed with Comandante Manuel de Jesús Castro's Californians in this vicinity November 16, 1846. Casualties on each side consisted of several men killed and wounded. The Americans saved a large drove of horses for Lieutenant Colonel John C. Frémont, who concluded an armistice at Cahuenga in January 1847.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
