Plaza Hotel

In 1813-14 a one-story adobe barracks building was erected for soldiers who represented the Spanish government. In 1858 Angelo Zanetta added a second story to the building and operated it as a hotel for many years. Because San Juan Bautista was one of the main stage stops between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the Plaza Hotel became famous throughout California.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
