Castro House

In the 1840's the Castro house was built for General José Castro's administrative office and to house the general's secretary. In 1848 Castro sold the house to Patrick Breen, survivor of the ill-fated Donner party of 1846. The Breen family lived here for many years.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
