Kolenbunker.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Coal bunker.
NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE
Introduction
COAL BUNKER, as an example of a storage facility for coal. After the fort had been stoked with wood and peat, from the end of the First World War onwards increasingly switched to coal. This was also thanks to the rise of and supply from the Dutch coal mines in Limburg, but after the war German and English coal also came (again). Supply took place by water, after which covered storage of the fuel in a newly built brick and concrete bunker. The object presumably had chutes at the top. The structure was presumably built fairly low to simplify the dropping of coal from above and not to make an easy target of artillery. The building was in somewhat neglected but reasonably recognisable condition during inspection.
Description
COAL BUNKER, located approximately 10 metres to the right of the access bridge of Fort Pannerden and consisting of approximately 10 m long and 2 m deep, partly brick (the visible wall on the fort side) and partly concrete (the roof) storage, with three separate accesses to one and the same interior space.
Valuation
The COAL BUNKER at the entrance to Fort Pannerden is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years. This is a component from around 1920 that is an example of a remnant of a low storage facility built specially for coal storage for the fort.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component has become rare and is representative because such buildings for fuel storage have not or scarcely been found elsewhere within the system of the New Holland Waterline.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because both the brick elevation and the concrete roof have remained observable and recognisable.
