NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW DUTCH WATERLINE

Introduction

OUTLET SLUICE / INUNDATION SLUICE / DAM SLUICE / CULVERT (north) as a water engineering component of the inundation system in the southwestern part of the New Dutch Waterline. The sluice is located approximately 1300 metres north of the fort Werk aan de Bakkerskil in the curve in the Schenkeldijk between the Schans and the Den Dekkerweg. The defence system of the New Dutch Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) land areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were used, depending on where they functioned in the system. Sometimes existing navigation, outlet or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) modified. To the latter category belonged an outlet sluice located several hundred metres north of the Werk aan de Bakkerskil in the (East) Schenkeldijk. This small sluice also received a function as part of the water inlet into the difficult-to-flood Land of Altena and as a dam sluice, by means of which a set flood could be maintained at the desired level. The outlet sluice in the (East) Schenkeldijk could also function as an outlet of the Werkensche Boezem (a basin) when the water in the Bakkerskil was lower than that in the basin; for this purpose the sluice was equipped with a set of pointed gates opening towards the Bakkerskil.

Description

OUTLET SLUICE / INUNDATION SLUICE / DAM SLUICE / CULVERT (north) in the curve in the Schenkeldijk between the Schans and the Den Dekkerweg. An outlet sluice, inundation sluice and dam sluice executed as approximately 30 metres long culvert, with sluice-gate-beam provision and originally (presumably) one or two sluice gates. The tops of the fronts lie on either side approximately 10 metres outside the dike crown and open onto ditches. The fronts lie several metres below the crown of the dike. On the east side the culvert is closed straight off, while the pipe here is provided with wings descending at an angle of approximately 45 degrees. On the west side comparable, but possibly slightly shorter wings.

Valuation

The OUTLET SLUICE / INUNDATION SLUICE / DAM SLUICE / CULVERT (north) in the Schinkeldijk between the Schans and the Den Dekkerweg is of general interest on account of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Dutch Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of building related to military-strategic engineering, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence.

This is an expression of historical water engineering related to military-strategic building techniques, in the form of a culvert with various functions.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Dutch Waterline. Also on account of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is fairly well preserved because the principal form, the structural detailing, and adaptation to the function as inundation and dam sluice of the culvert have remained clearly recognisable.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it clearly shows the former function for the benefit of the New Dutch Waterline.
