NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Toegangsdeur rechts later ingebracht in verkleind kozijn.

Omschrijving

NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE

Introduction

BOMBPROOF BUILDING, REMISE D as representative of a type of bombproof structures provided with an earth covering on three sides and on top and possessing only a facade on the gorge side. The bombproof building D, located on the south-west half-bastion, is fitted out as a powder magazine and gun remise. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts and the explosive power of (brisance) grenades it became increasingly difficult to withstand bombardment. Thickening of brickwork, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (amongst other things by means of arches and vaults), shallow slope angles and curved or conversely pointed forms, use of concrete - and later of reinforced concrete - in increasingly heavy execution, was one of the ways to keep the fortifications resistant to increasing attack power. Furthermore, the application of earth coverings had proved to be a good means to absorb or dampen the energy of impacts. This is the reason why many masonry or concrete structures were provided with an earth layer or a front protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of construction - and thereby of the expected impact force of projectiles - 'bombproof buildings' were spoken of when they were deemed to be able to withstand a predetermined number of impacts from heavy calibre. The bombproof building, remise D, is executed in brick and, due to the location of the structure in the wall slope, comprises above-ground building storeys on two levels and a basement storey. Access door on the right, later inserted in a reduced frame.

Description

The BOMBPROOF BUILDING, REMISE D is situated on the south-west side of the structure in the front wall and extends there with an approximately 40 m long, relatively low facade over two 'ground' levels: the right part of the remise is situated one storey higher than the left part. This level difference was related to the (original) arrangement of the main wall at this location with a low flank for moat defence and a high flank for sweeping the Uppelse Dijk and the fore-terrain. The structure is covered on top and on three front sides with earthworks; only a facade on the north side is visible. The facade of the right part ends in a blunt point, slopes gently to the left and continues further horizontally, then ending in a sloping retaining wall. The bombproof building, remise D is executed in brick, has a sober form, virtually without plastic or characteristics of articulation. A limited number of, partly blocked facade openings, including a later modified access under three roll-mouldings arched on the right and an originally smaller access, lower in the left facade part. In the interior amongst other things a masonry staircase which leads past several arched rooms and a corridor which also provides access to various adjoining rooms. A munitions lift, a simple privy, many wooden doors and internal windows form part of the largely authentic interior of the structure. Apart from some modifications in the facade the building is intact and furthermore is in good condition.

Valuation

The BOMBPROOF BUILDING, REMISE D of the Fort on the Uppelse Dijk / Fort Altena is of general importance on account of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others strengthened and improved over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building design, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).

The component is relatively rare and representative because it is one of the few buildings which was fitted out for the benefit of a low and high flank.

This concerns a component from around 1880, namely an example of an earth-protected, bombproof building for storage of materiel.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline and on account of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it is a good example of an accommodation for materiel as part of a fort in the last quarter of the 19th century.

* The component is well-preserved because diverse characteristic components in exterior and interior have been retained and remain recognisable.
