NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE

Introduction

CULVERT (bend in Maasdijk), long known as the Poederoijense Sluis, as a hydraulic engineering component of the New Holland Waterline, serving to communicate inundation areas on either side of the embankment. The defence system of the New Holland Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) land surfaces. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as sluices, weirs, culverts, ditches and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be quickly set and maintained within strict limits. Culverts - often in the form of a masoned passage, but also executed as a pipe - were necessary in several places to lead inundation water under roads and dykes and to maintain or set the same level on either side of them.
