Cluster 55. Bergloods.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 55. Storage Shed.

NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE

Introduction

STONE STORAGE SHED, built in 1937 as a relatively large storage facility on the Fortification at Vreeswijk.

At various locations inside and outside fort grounds, over the course of decades, wooden, stone and metal ('sheet metal') sheds were erected to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, accommodation for people or equipment, hospital, fire service, horse stable, guardhouse, etc.

A large part of these sheds has meanwhile deteriorated, been demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are simple buildings of small dimensions, but there are also more complex and larger examples. This concerns a component from a period in which the fortifications in the NHW were mainly used for non-defensive purposes, such as (ammunition) storage, shooting range, etc.

The stone storage building of the Fortification at Vreeswijk is located centrally on the north side of the fort.

East of it two younger buildings have been placed which are connected to the storage building by means of a lower, elongated intermediate section. The east facade is here mostly hidden from view. Both buildings are not significant for the protection.

The storage building now has a cultural function.

Description

The STONE STORAGE SHED from 1937 is located on the broad north side of the fort. The building is constructed in brick on a rectangular floor plan and comprises one and a half storeys under a gabled roof covered with dampened hollow tiles. The western – and presumably the eastern – long facade is articulated by nine pilaster strips and comprises at two-thirds of the facade height two flat-roofed cappels, in which entrances with double-opening doors and windows to either side of these. The seven bays provided with windows with divided frames. The entrances are located in the end facades and are altered; small, high-placed windows to left and right of these and on the upper storey double-opening doors and a hoist beam.

Valuation

The STONE STORAGE SHED of the Fortification at Vreeswijk is of general interest because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus was realised and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years was strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building art, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th and 20th century).

The component is an example of a storage building from the end of the Interwar period, when many forts mainly had storage functions.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because various characteristics of the function as storage space are recognisably present, despite the partially concealed east facade.
