Cluster 55. Fortwachterswoning.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding
FORTWACHTERSWONING

Description
Cluster 55. Fort keeper's dwelling.
NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE
Introduction
FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING
Because most forts and other defensive works (located outside the built-up area) - when there was no question of mobilisation or exercises - had no garrison of military personnel, in many cases there was a separate dwelling or other accommodation for a manager or keeper. Sometimes such a dwelling or accommodation also had another function, such as that of lock keeper's dwelling, or bridge keeper's house. In the applied architecture there is consequently no uniformity; the building material used varies, but is usually brick or wood and the number of storeys also differs. As far as the location of a keeper's dwelling is concerned, there are no clear standards either; some fort keeper's dwellings lie within the fort ditch, others outside it - sometimes even at some distance from the fort.
Against the north and south gables annexes were later placed of one storey under a flat roof, which are not important for protection.
Description
The FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING located on the gorge side of the fort was built between 1880 and 1900 and is constructed in brick on a rectangular ground plan and comprises one storey under a gabled roof, covered with eaves tiles. The gables were later plastered and whitewashed. The south gable has a window on the first storey as well as in the gable. The east gable contains a window and a door. The north gable is identical to the south gable.
Valuation
The FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING of the Defensive Work at Vreeswijk is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.
* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).
The component is an example of a military service dwelling.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
- The component is a representative example of a late 19th-century fort keeper's dwelling.
- The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form is largely retained.
