Omschrijving
Cluster 55.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE Inleiding

Description
Cluster 55. Fort complex with earthworks, ditches, (remaining) envelope, roads and military state land.
NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE Introduction
FORT COMPLEX WITH EARTHWORKS, DITCHES, (REMAINING) ENVELOPE, ROADS AND MILITARY STATE LAND as an example of an older, primarily earthen defensive work used and adapted in the 19th century.
The Defensive Work at Vreeswijk arose in phases through excavation and adaptation of schanzes and earthworks. In 1567 there was mention of a schanze. This work was repaired and improved several times. In 1672 the defence was strengthened by the French, but later partially demolished again. In 1786-1787 an entirely new open defensive work was constructed, which in 1820 was converted into a closed work. From this fortification the earthwork of the work remains. In 1852/1853 improvements took place, resulting in an earthwork open at the gorge. Unlike most forts, no bomb-proof buildings were erected. On the west, at the open gorge side, approximately halfway through the work a dam was laid in the ditch providing access to the fort, instead of the original bridge.
Description
FORT COMPLEX WITH EARTHWORKS, DITCHES, (REMAINING) ENVELOPE, ROADS AND MILITARY STATE LAND of the Defensive Work at Vreeswijk. The work consists of a main "comma-shaped" earthwork with on its front side a slightly curved rampart that could provide protection to troops and weapons stationed behind it, buildings, terrain or facilities. On the north side remains of an older enclosing wall are recognisable. The greatest length is approximately 150 m; the greatest width approximately 100 m. Around the earthwork a ditch which in the south borders the Lekdijk and which in the east does not entirely reflect the contours of the earthwork, but possibly reflects an older form with two small bastions. The northern half of the ditch is bordered by an envelope which is again partly accompanied by a boundary ditch. On the outside of the ditches lie roads for maintenance and/or traffic. Outside the ditches remains of the Military State Land. The fort complex borders directly on the (historic) centre of Vreeswijk, with lock complex and forms with it a partly functional unit.
Valuation
The FORT COMPLEX WITH EARTHWORKS, DITCHES, (REMAINING) ENVELOPE, ROADS AND MILITARY STATE LAND of the Defensive Work at Vreeswijk is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 laid out by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.
* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century). This concerns a component from the period 1815-1826: Fortifications and works from the earliest period of the New Holland Water Line with the use of components from the Old Holland Water Line.
The component is an example of an earthen complex later not provided with bomb-proof buildings with ditch and represents an early phase in the construction of the line.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* Urban design values within the Vreeswijk centre in general and in connection with the lock complex there in particular.
* The component is a representative and rare example of a defensive work without bomb-proof buildings from the earliest period of the New Holland Water Line.
* The component is relatively well preserved in the 19th-century execution, with only the construction of the dam on the west side having disturbed this image.
