NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding
MUNITIEBERGPLAATS D, in 1901 gebouwd als niet bomvrije, bakstenen berging op het Verdedigingswerk te Vreeswijk.
Op verschillende plaatsen zijn binnen en buiten fortterreinen in de loop der decennia houten, stenen en metalen ('blikken') loodsen tot stand gekomen om te dienen als (provisorische of permanente) bergruimte, opslag, onderkomen voor mensen of materieel, hospitaal, brandweer, paardenstal, wachthuis, enz.
Een groot deel van deze loodsen is inmiddels vergaan, gesloopt of verplaatst, maar andere bestaan nog in situ. Soms gaat het om eenvoudige bouwwerkjes van geringe omvang, maar er zijn ook meer complexe en grotere exemplaren. Het betreft hier een onderdeel uit een periode waarin de verdedigingswerken in de NHW in toenemende mate gebruikt werden voor niet-defensieve doeleinden, zoals munitieopslag, schietbaan, enz.
De munitiebergplaats van het Verdedigingswerk te Vreeswijk bevindt zich aan de westzijde van het fort.
Omschrijving
De MUNITIEBERGPLAATS D uit 1901 is gelegen aan de westzijde van het fort. Het gebouwtje is opgetrokken in baksteen in staand verband op een rechthoekige plattegrond. De munitiebergplaats heeft één bouwlaag onder een met gesmoorde holle pannen gedekt zadeldak. Aan de voor- en achterzijde een overstek en een makelaar. In de voorgevel is de entree, met een halfrond bovenlicht, waarin de letter 'd'. In de achtergevel een getoogd venster. De zijgevels zijn blind met vlak onder de dakrand een reeks ventilatiegaten.
Waardering
De MUNITIEBERGPLAATS D van het Verdedigingswerk te Vreeswijk is van algemeen belang vanwege:
* Cultuurhistorische waarden als onderdeel van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie zoals deze is ontworpen door C.R.T. Kraijenhoff en in eerste aanleg vanaf 1815 door hem, Jan Blanken en majoor-ingenieur Willem Offerhaus is gerealiseerd en daarna door anderen gedurende ongeveer 125 jaar is versterkt en verbeterd.
* Architectuurhistorische waarden in het bijzonder als uiting van de militair-strategische bouwkunde, die gebaseerd is op: a. het systeem van inundatie en accesverdediging (19de eeuw), b. de wedloop met de zich versterkende offensieve middelen (19de en 20ste eeuw).
Het onderdeel is een voorbeeld van een munitiebergplaats.
* Ensemblewaarde en situationele waarden als onderdeel van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Tevens vanwege de functionele en fysieke samenhang met de overige onderdelen van het complex.

AMMUNITION STORAGE BUILDING D, built in 1901 as a non-bombproof brick storage facility on the Fortification at Vreeswijk.

The AMMUNITION STORAGE BUILDING D from 1901 is located on the west side of the fort. The building is constructed in brick in running bond on a rectangular floor plan. The ammunition storage building has one storey under a gabled roof covered with dampened hollow tiles. On the front and rear sides an overhang and a gutter. In the front facade is the entrance, with a semicircular fanlight, in which the letter 'd'. In the rear facade a chamfered window. The side facades are blank with, directly below the eaves, a series of ventilation openings.
