Omschrijving
Cluster 53. Houten Schotbalkenloods.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 53. Wooden Timber-Plank Shed.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
WOODEN TIMBER-PLANK SHED, built circa 1935 and intended for the storage of beams to enable closure of the western lock chamber of the culvert under the Lekkanaal. In various locations within and outside fort grounds, in the course of decades wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been constructed to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, shelter for people or material, hospital, fire service, stable, guard house, etc. Timber-plank sheds can also be counted among this category of storage places. A large part of such sheds has meanwhile decayed, been demolished or moved, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple small structures of minor scale, but there are also more complex and larger examples. The timber-plank shed along the west side of the Lekkanaal belongs to the simple, small sheds, but the type is also relatively rare because of this.
Description
WOODEN TIMBER-PLANK SHED from circa 1935 at the culvert on the west side of the Lekkanaal. The shed, without window openings, has one storey and is built on a rectangular ground plan of approximately 7.00 x 4.00 m. The gabled roof, covered with black bitumen, has some overhang at the long sides. The entirely wooden, very simple shed, is boarded with wooden parts placed vertically a few centimetres apart and has some cross-braced stability struts. The space between the planks is intended to allow the wind to keep the beams stored in it dry. The (main) entrance, consisting of double doors opening outwards, is located on the north side, beneath a – as on the south side – horizontally boarded gable top. The interior was not visited.
Valuation
The WOODEN TIMBER-PLANK SHED is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Krayenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others strengthened and improved for approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden building related to military-strategic engineering, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (20th century).
This concerns a component from the interwar period, namely a wooden storage shed from circa 1935.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and in particular with the culvert under the Lekkanaal.
* The component is representative because it is an example of a timber-plank shed built during the interwar period at a culvert laid out in the same period.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and function have remained clearly recognisable.
