Cluster 53. Damsluis.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 53. Dam Lock.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
DAM LOCK as a water barrier in the Schalkwijkse Wetering at the location of a former inundation dike. The dike lay to the east of the former Vaartsche Rijn, later the Merwedekanaal, and was connected with the inundation zone east of the Fort at Jutphaas. At this point the dike made a bend westwards. Slightly to the south of this dam lock lay a second example. On and along the former inundation dike now lies the Structuurbaan. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as locks, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be quickly set and maintained within narrow limits. Many different types of locks were employed, depending on where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing shipping, drainage or check locks were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) adapted. The dam lock consists of two lock heads on either side of the Schalkwijkske Wetering. In particular the northern lock head has partially crumbled away.
Description
The DAM LOCK is located in the Schalkwijkske Wetering between the Lekkanaal and the Merwedekanaal, on the west side the Structuurbaan. This small dam lock, which dates from 1884, is constructed of red brick masonry with a capping plate. From the still visible rebates it can be read that the small lock could be closed with a double timber-plank barrier.
Valuation
The DAM LOCK in the Schalkwijkske Wetering is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others strengthened and improved for approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of building related to military-strategic engineering, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).
This concerns an expression of historical hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic engineering, namely a dam lock.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline in general and in particular as an element related to other, partly no longer existing or no longer recognisable water and inundation works.
* The component is a characteristic component of the inundation system of the New Hollandic Waterline, in which dam locks were frequently employed.
* The component is moderately well preserved because the main form has remained recognisable, but there are also clear signs of decay observable.
