NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

SLUICE as a component added to the existing system of waterways necessitated by the construction of new large-scale water engineering works to the New Hollandic Waterline. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on controlled inundation of (large) areas of terrain. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be rapidly set and maintained within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were employed, depending on the place where they functioned in the system. Sometimes existing navigation, drainage or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (significantly) modified. In this case it concerns a lock sluice that had been constructed as a connection between the Schalkwijkse Wetering and the Lek Canal, which was laid out around 1936. The sluice was also intended to serve in times of war as an inundation and check sluice for the area behind it.

Description

The SLUICE is located at the Sluispad and was constructed as a connection between the Lek Canal and the Schalkwijkse Wetering around 1938, shortly after the construction of the Lek Canal. The sluice is executed with concrete walls, which at the top are provided with a steel thrust profile. The chamber width is approximately four metres, the length approximately twenty metres. In the sluice wall on the south-east side a concrete staircase has been installed. The walls are provided on two levels with mooring recesses with bollards. The sluice is equipped with rare single-leaf wooden swing gates. The gates are provided at the top with a steel lattice and are equipped there with winding gear for the operation of sluice gates. The gates are operated from the sluice heads and have curved, toothed quadrants. On the west side, in front of the gate in the chamber on the Lek Canal side, there is a rebate for a stop plank barrier that can be used when used as a check sluice.
