NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

CULVERT under the Lek Canal as an important waterworks element at the Lek Canal newly laid out around 1936. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was in the first place based on the controlled inundation of (large) terrain surfaces. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as locks, weirs, drainage channels and canals, with which the water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow limits. The drainage channels and canals were often already present locally and required at most some adaptation, but in a number of cases they were specially dug in service of the waterline. The culvert under the Lek Canal formed from 1936 - independently of the canal - an open water connection between the two formerly directly connected parts of the Schalkwijkse Wetering. Upon deepening of the Lek Canal (1980s), the part of the culvert that lay under water was demolished. What remains are the landheads / basins on both banks. The steel grilles and steel gates over the top and along the underside just above the water are later additions.

Description

CULVERT under the Lek Canal from circa 1936, recognizable by two - on either side of the canal - opposite one another lying basins. The eastern one lies somewhat to the north of the lock in the Schalkwijkse Wetering. This eastern basin of the culvert in the Schalkwijkse Wetering is executed in concrete and is subdivided into three equal openings. The double rabbets for possibly placing barrier boards are still visible in the concrete. There are no barrier boards present. The western basin of the culvert is likewise executed in concrete and is likewise divided into three openings. Here too double rabbets for the purpose of the barrier boards. Beside the basins remain parts of the culvert under the Liniedijk on the eastern side of the Lek Canal and under the Schipperspad on the western side of the canal.

Valuation

The CULVERT with openings on either side of the Lek Canal is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realized by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for more than 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building technique, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th century).

The component is an example of a manifestation of historical waterworks engineering related to military-strategic building technique.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form has remained clearly recognizable.

* The component is representative because it is an example of a large culvert specially built in connection with the New Hollandic Waterline.
