Inleiding

Introduction

Double LOCKS, named the Prinses Beatrixsluizen, designed in 1938 by J.P. Josephus Jitta, engineer of Rijkswaterstaat and L.S.P. Scheffer. The construction was carried out by J. Mulder (?). The double twin lock is situated in the Lekkanaal, which connects the Lek with the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal. Scheffer also designed the lock keeper's buildings on the central pier and the office combined with workshop on the east side of the complex. These buildings are partly demolished or fall outside the protection. The architectural style is functionalist. On the north side of the lock is a traffic bridge. The residential dwellings and sheds built in 1962 on the east side of the lock fall outside the protection, as do the lock keeper's buildings on the central pier completed in 1997.

Description

The double locks situated on the south side in the Lekkanaal consist of two identical concrete lock chambers of 225 metres length, separated by a central pier, and two portals placed on either side of it, in which the lifting gates or lock sluices are suspended. Furthermore, on either side of the southern portal, on the central pier, there are two semicircular single-storey lock keeper's buildings and a freestanding two-storey lock keeper's building stands to the north of it. The portals each have three whitewashed lifting towers of reinforced concrete, along which the lock gates move up and down. Above them is a covered connecting bridge in which the lifting mechanisms are housed. Along the full length of the bridge are steel three-light windows placed with at the ends an open semicircular balcony with projecting flat roof. The towers have narrow windows. The lock keeper's buildings on either side of the southern tower are of concrete and have a semicircular facade under a flat roof. The freestanding lock keeper's building has two storeys with a semicircular south facade under a projecting flat roof. On the upper floor is a balcony with a steel balustrade. On the north side an extension is placed of one storey with opening doors and windows.

Valuation

The lock complex is of general importance because of the architectural-historical value as an example of the type of double twin lock with lifting gates, erected in functionalist style. It is important in the oeuvre of J.P. Josephus Jitta and L.S.P. Scheffer as well as of image-forming value.
