Inleiding

Introduction

The historical development of the SITE LAYOUT/SITE ARRANGEMENT of Rijkswerf Willemsoord is described in the accompanying complex description (complex number 508460).

The numbering of the various buildings (building 1, 3, 29, and so on) appears only in the reasoned descriptions per protected component and corresponds to the numbering as assigned to the various buildings in the 1950s by the building service of Rijkswerf Willemsoord. The buildings are locally known by these numbers.

Description

The protected site concerns the (former) Rijkswerf Willemsoord located in the northeast of the municipality of Den Helder, with associated waterways. The Rijkswerf, officially called Maritiem Etablissement Willemsoord, is situated between the Marsdiep (to the north), the Nieuwe Diep (to the east), Zuidstraat (to the south) and Weststraat and Molenplein (to the west).

The delimitation of the SITE LAYOUT/SITE ARRANGEMENT of the complex "Rijkswerf Willemsoord" is based on historical functional coherence. The boundary of the protected layout runs in the northwest, west and southwest over (up to and including) the outer embankments of the Afsluitingskanaal, in the southeast up to and including the outer banks of the Maritieme Binnenhaven, in the east and northeast the boundary follows the cadastral property boundaries of the southeastern compartment and the northeastern compartment insofar as in use by the Navy. Therefore, the four compartments, the docks, dock canal, Afsluitingskanaal and Maritieme Binnenhaven fall within the boundary of protection of the layout.

Rijkswerf Willemsoord is laid out on a north-south oriented rectangular ground plan with an indentation on the east side. In this indentation, a connection is made via a sea lock between the Nieuwe Diep and the wet dock. The wet dock (monument number 508472) with a rectangular north-south oriented ground plan forms the core of the Rijkswerf site. Around the wet dock are, as it were, four compartments: a northeastern, a southeastern, a southwestern and a northwestern located compartment, whereby the divisions between the compartments are formed by: the axis on which the present Navy Museum (monument number 508470) is located (north), the sea lock (east), dock canal Boerenverdriet (south), and the old dock (west).

The compartment located to the northeast of the wet dock (monument number 508472) (currently in use by the Navy) houses among other things the Administration Building (monument number 508480), the main building of the Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine (monument number 508461) and the Teaching Building for Officer Cadets (monument number 508462).

The two western compartments contain the oldest buildings and structures of the yard: the two dry docks (monument number 508471 and monument number 508463), the steam engine building (monument number 508466), the four long workshop buildings along the western edge (monument numbers 508473, 508475, 508476 and 508467), the gunboat sheds on the north side (monument number 508465) and the mast shed on the south side (monument number 508464). The entrance pylons (monument number 508478) stand at the western main entrance. In addition, various buildings have been constructed on the western compartments in more recent times including: the residence for the police officer (monument number 508474), the store for the fire engine (monument number 508477), the mess hall for dock workers (monument number 508479), the boiler workshop (monument number 508468) and the ship carpenter's workshop (monument number 508469).

On the south side of the wet dock, the dock canal Boerenverdriet (the lock gates have since been welded shut) formed the connection between the wet dock on the one hand and the Maritieme Binnenhaven and Afsluitingskanaal on the other. The Afsluitingskanaal forms, apart from the south side, also on the west and partly on the north side the boundary of the Rijkswerf site.

On the yard site there are four crane runways. These are the following objects: the crane runway along the south side of the old dock with riveted steel tower crane from 1951-1952 (1); the crane runway along the southeast side of the new dock with welded steel tower crane from 1940 and thoroughly rebuilt in 1957. The latter was placed on the yard site around 2004 to replace a similar example that had been here since 1953 (2); the crane runway along the west side of the wet dock (3); and the crane runway laid out to the north of the wet dock in 1968 (4). Although these cranes and crane runways do not date from the 19th-century construction periods of the respective docks, there is a functional coherence that should be maintained.

On the quays of the Rijkswerf site stand many bollards of various sizes and types, which are also subject to protection. Some bollards are reused cannon barrels which have been anchored with the barrel in the ground, for example the bollard on the longitudinal axis of the new dock.

Valuation

The SITE LAYOUT/SITE ARRANGEMENT of Rijkswerf Willemsoord is of general importance from a maritime-historical and architectural-historical perspective, as a functional and substantive link between the various components belonging to the complex (including buildings, structures and other objects).

Furthermore, the site arrangement is significant, in conjunction with the various structures and buildings present on the site, as an important part of the oeuvre of Jan Blanken Jansz.

At detail level, the components in the yard site (such as sluices and bollards) have historical-hydraulic engineering value, cultural-historical value and age value.
