Inleiding

Introduction

The SHIPWRIGHT'S WORKSHOP, locally known as building 51, with SHIP SLIPWAY is situated on the southwestern compartment of the Rijkswerf Willemsoord complex, between the old dock (to the north) and the new dock (to the south). According to the specifications, construction of the shipwright's workshop began in 1938. In 1942 the construction of the first section was completed. The overhead travelling cranes probably date from 1948. The protected section of the shipwright's workshop consists of the western part with three sawtooth roofs as well as the high-rising part with two sawtooth roofs. In addition, the ship slipway located to the east of the workshop from approximately 1930 and the overhead travelling cranes from 1948 fall under the protection.

N.B. The most northeasterly wing, parallel to the ship slipway with overhead travelling cranes, dates from the period 1949-1953 and does not fall under the protection.

Description

Workshop built on a composite ground plan of two rectangles. The easterly located rectangle forms the basis for the highest building volume with two sawtooth roofs, the westerly located rectangle for a lower building volume with three sawtooth roofs. The ridge lines of the sawtooth roofs are perpendicular to the Weststraat. The roofs have roof felt covering on the southern roof pitches, the northern roof pitches have steel window rows with clear-glass panes across their full height and width.

The load-bearing structure consists of a riveted steel skeleton, consisting of steel columns and beams and triangular roof trusses. Each column consists of two I-section posts riveted together in a foot which is anchored in a concrete foundation. The roof trusses rest on the columns and the beams laid upon them. The southern roof pitches consist of bimcement slabs, the northern ones of steel post and rail work with windows with multiple-pane glazing bars between them.

The facades consist of steel frameworks, infilled with timber-framed masonry and partly with steel windows. The plinth is partly of concrete, the gutters are all of concrete.

The east facade has a width of two gables. Both have on the ground floor a large square steel door in which a double cramp-fastened door hangs. The doors are provided with a steel frame for reinforcement. These doors open outward.

The south facade is fourteen bays wide. Each bay consists of a horizontal steel frame with timber-framed masonry infill. The steel framework of the eastern, high-rising, section is four bays wide and has a height of seven modules. In this section one window is installed. The steel skeleton of the western section is ten bays wide and four modules high. In nine modules is a steel window with six panes located over a height of two frameworks. The west facade has a width of three gables. On the ground floor three large steel windows are installed.

The north facade of the building is obscured from view by various (unprotected) extensions.

In the interior the original skeleton structure remains intact and the original overhead travelling cranes are still present.

The ship slipway to the east of building 51 consists of a masonry slipway, partly provided with a concrete layer, with two steel overhead travelling crane rails. The overhead travelling crane rails have a framework of three rows of each seven steel columns with east-west-directed beams resting upon them. Each column consists of a combination of two adjacent I-section posts - stiffened by riveted triangular bracing - on a steel foot. The column foot is anchored in a concrete foundation. The beams consist of steel I-profile beams, partly stiffened by triangular constructions.

The most northerly row of columns also forms the skeleton for the extension realized between 1949 and 1953 (which does not fall under the protection).

Valuation

The property is of general importance as a historically functional component of the Rijkswerf Willemsoord complex. In addition, the property is of importance from a cultural and architectural-historical perspective as an example of a ship's workshop built in the first half of the 20th century. Due to its central location on the Rijkswerf grounds, the property has image-defining value for the appearance of the works from the side of the wet dock.
