Inleiding

VERDEDIGBARE FORTWACHTERSWONING

Introduction

DEFENDABLE FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING

Because most forts and other defensive works (located outside built-up areas) - when there was no mobilisation or exercises - had no garrison of military personnel, in many cases there was a separate dwelling or other accommodation for a manager or keeper. Sometimes such a dwelling or accommodation also had another function, such as that of a lock keeper's dwelling or bridge keeper's dwelling. With regard to the location of a keeper's dwelling, there are no clear standards; the building material used varies, but usually brick or wood was used, and the roof forms are also not uniform. In rare cases, such as at the Fort bij 't Hemeltje, where it is executed in heavy masonry, the fort keeper's dwelling is constructed in a defensible manner.

Description

The DEFENSIBLE FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING from 1878-1880, located at the entrance to the fort, is a detached residential building with a rectangular ground plan, consisting of one storey under a gabled roof covered with suppressed Spanish tiles, which was installed in 1920. The wind braces and the gutter resting on stone corbels are of wood. The fort keeper's dwelling was originally covered by a flattened gabled roof, but presumably received a gabled roof around 1920. The walls are constructed of heavy masonry and are approximately 80 cm thick. In the northern facade (the gorge side of the fort, where the entrance is also located) there were originally three loopholes, while in the western facade there was one loophole. These facades were later rendered. In the four facades there are mainly arched windows with six-pane sash windows and double shutters. All facades are two window bays wide, with the exception of the southern gable end. This has an arched window on the left, next to which on the right side is a modern extension under a flat roof. In this extension is the access to the dwelling. In the apex on the central axis above is one window with a casement. The northern gable end has two windows with four-pane frames in the apex. Against the southern facade is a modern extension constructed with a new entrance to the dwelling.

Valuation

The DEFENSIBLE FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING of the Fort bij 't Hemeltje is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a connected system of inundation fields and associated inundation means and firing fields. This system was supplemented with various types of defensive works dating from different periods that served to or contributed to the closure of non-inundatable terrain or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on: - the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), - the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (19th century).

This is an example of a defensible service dwelling from the years 1878-1880.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is rare because it is a rare example of a reinforced and thus defensible fort keeper's dwelling.

* The component is relatively well preserved because it has retained many characteristics from the construction and functional period in its architecture and detailing.
