Inleiding

Omschrijving

Waardering

Introduction

BOMBPROOF FLANK BATTERY A with POTERNE and REMISE A with OPEN FLANK BATTERY as components of a type of bombproof structure that is provided as much as possible with an earth covering and that possesses only necessary facades on the gorge side. Flank batteries are intended to command the ditch, projecting parts of the main wall of a fort or fortification and the terrain immediately in front of it, and they consist of casemates or other gun emplacements positioned obliquely in the main wall. Their flanking fire meant that the main wall was difficult to approach. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts and the explosive power of (high-explosive) grenades, it became increasingly difficult to withstand attacks. Reinforcement of masonry, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (among other means by means of arches), shallow slopes and curved or pointed shapes, use of concrete - and later reinforced concrete - in increasingly heavy construction, was one of the ways to make the fortifications resistant to increasing attack power. Furthermore, the application of earth coverings proved to be a good means of absorbing or dampening energy. This is the reason why many masonry or concrete works are provided with an earth layer or front protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of construction - and thus the expected impact force of projectiles to be anticipated - one spoke of 'bombproof buildings', when they were deemed capable of withstanding a predefined number of impacts from heavy calibre.

Description

In the gorge of the southwestern bastion lies the BOMBPROOF FLANK BATTERY A with POTERNE and REMISE A with OPEN FLANK BATTERY dating from 1878-1880. This battery is in its layout nearly a mirror image of flank battery B; the remise on the upper storey is extended at remise A - something which did not happen at remise B. The masonry facade consists of a slightly curved wall with a three-layered semicircular archway entrance section to the POTERNE. This entrance can be closed with a thick wooden double door. Directly behind the entrance, the poterne contains two gunpowder magazines, surrounded by a narrow passage. The poterne continues further to two cannon casemates, after which the poterne bends towards the remise with open FLANK BATTERY. The exit of this is mortared shut. Directly beside the entrance to the poterne, a second curved retaining wall joins here. This wall runs in the curve diagonally downwards and is finished at the top edge with wattle. The upper storey of the building contains REMISE A, which was enlarged on the right side in 1885. The remise has an arched entrance section with double wooden doors with an arched window section on each side. The original storey is spanned by a three-layered semicircular arch relieving arch. To the right of the entrance is the 1885 extension, constructed of rubble concrete.

Valuation

The BOMBPROOF FLANK BATTERY A with POTERNE and REMISE A with OPEN FLANK BATTERY of the Fort at 't Hemeltje is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others strengthened and improved for approximately 125 years.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation means and shooting fields. This system was supplemented with various types of built or constructed (defence) works dating from different periods that served to or contributed to closing off non-inundatable terrain or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building craft, which is based on: - the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), - the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (19th century).

This concerns here a component that is a fairly intact example, both externally and internally in terms of main form and layout, of a bombproof structure from the years 1878-1880 and 1885.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Furthermore because of the functional and physical coherence with the remaining components of the complex.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is a good and relatively rare example of a bombproof flank battery with poterne and remise with open flank battery.

* The component is well preserved because it has retained the characteristics from the construction and functional period in its architecture and detailing.
