The register's description

Omschrijving

Waardering

Het hoofdgebouw vertegenwoordigt algemeen belang wegens:

de betekenis voor de architectuurgeschiedenis want het is een mijlpaal met bijzondere esthetische kwaliteiten uit het oeuvre van architect Jac. Koolhaas terwijl de structuur van het hoofdgebouw, opzet en inrichting gaaf en herkenbaar behouden zijn;

de cultuurhistorische waarde aangezien eigentijds, modern gedachtegoed over hygiëne, sociale emancipatie en naoorlogse vrijetijdsbesteding erin tot uitdrukking zijn gebracht;

de zeldzaamheid;

de gave bouwkundige staat;

Description

The basement-containing, flat-roofed main building has an elongated, diamond-shaped floor plan, comprises three storeys and is constructed as a concrete frame with cantilevered floors. Three sides of the building are clad with cement corrugated sheets (north, east, west); the north facade is articulated on the upper storeys with eight tall and narrow, mutually parallel bay-like projections and has four vertical window strips. The building contains on the ground floor on the east side an entrance with stairs covered over the storeys, above this a substantial rectangular window with glazing bars on the left side and to its right the facade inscription "Openluchtbad de Papiermolen". The rear or south facade features on the two storeys two parallel window strips positioned one above the other; the ground floor connects to a tiled terrace. Against both the south-east and south-west corners of the main building are two multi-angled concrete ramps positioned one above the other, provided for the bathers. The ramps (known as 'snail house') connected the changing rooms via a wading channel and over the platforms or walkways with the swimming pools. The ramps of the main building were covered with glass in 1995. Internally the main building houses built-in cash desks, two turnstiles and furthermore an administration room, a board room and a café hall with kitchen and covered terrace. In the basement the technical installations are housed (on the two storeys until the conversion in 1995 were changing rooms: the first for ladies, the second for gentlemen; these rooms have been converted and function as a studio; per storey 76 hexagonal changing booths in honeycomb arrangement were placed in groups of ten).

Valuation

The main building represents public interest because of:

its significance for architectural history as it is a milestone with special aesthetic qualities from the oeuvre of architect Jac. Koolhaas while the structure of the main building, layout and interior remain intact and recognizable;

its cultural-historical value in that contemporary, modern ideas about hygiene, social emancipation and post-war leisure time are expressed in it;

its rarity;

its sound structural condition;

its urban planning position: both functionally and in terms of design the main building serves as the core and marking point of the complex and fulfils a leading role in the perception of the ensemble value of De Papiermolen.
