Inleiding
Waardering
Het gebouw is van algemeen belang:
- wegens de ensemblewaarde als hoofd complexonderdeel van het ontwerp waarbij het buitenterrein bewust is meegenomen in het ontwerpproces en als onlosmakelijk geheel met het gebouw zelf beschouwd moet worden;
- wegens de architectuurhistorische waarde als een Nederlands eerbetoon aan Le Corbusiers Unité d'Habitation;
- wegens de architectuurhistorische waarde als bijzonder toonbeeld van het vernieuwende gebruik van beton en betonelementen;
- wegens de bijzondere toepassing van monumentale wandkunst en gevelreliëf in en buiten het gebouw, in samenhang met het gebouw ontworpen door Nederlandse kunstenaars;
- wegens de gaafheid van interieur en exterieur in hoofdvorm, materiaalgebruik en detaillering;
- wegens de samenhang met de overige complexonderdelen.

Description
Introduction
A SCHOOL BUILDING inspired by Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation, subdivided and constructed according to the principles of Functionalism in 1952-1956. Designed by J.B. Ingwersen, C. de Geus and C. v.d. Bom as the First Christian LTS Patrimonium.
The school was originally divided vertically into a theory and practical section and horizontally from heavy to light use. The ground floor was intended for practical workshops. Among other things, the ramp refers to the practical classroom for car assembly. On the upper storeys there were lecture halls on the south side and practical, drawing and specialist classrooms on the north side respectively. On top of the fourth storey lay the canteen, covered with a gently curved roof. In the 1990s the building was renovated and adapted to modern requirements of use. At that time the concrete walls and reliefs were also provided with a coat of paint, the layout of the staff entrance hall was modified and the canteen was relocated to the ground floor with an intermediate storey. The colour use is therefore not original, apart from the reliefs by H. op de Laak in the canteen on the top storey. The layout of the floor plan has remained virtually unchanged but the distinction in division between theory and practice no longer exists in current use. The image by artist P. Eecen (concrete sculpture "playing children") which stood in the central hall was a gift from the teachers at the opening of the school. The image is no longer there and it is not known where it is located.
The building is currently still in use as a school building by the Europa College, part of ROC ASA.
Description
The school rests on heavy concrete legs whereby it is visually lifted from the ground and contains a basement, ground floor and four storeys. The building is slightly obliquely positioned in relation to the Wibautstraat to create optimal sun exposure and lighting, while also removing excessive visual weight of the building mass in relation to the Wibautstraat.
The school has a reinforced concrete frame and has a basic module of 3.5 metres, both horizontally (column spacing) and vertically (storey height). The consistently applied dimensional system is inspired by Le Corbusier's Modulor. The distance between the béton brut pylons on the ground floor is 7 m and the ground floor facades consist mainly of glass in wooden frames to suggest maximum openness. The closed facade sections and balustrades on the upper storeys are clad with board-marked concrete panels, which functioned as external formwork during construction. For the actual windows a board-marked concrete frame has been constructed, with a subdivision of 87.5 by 87.5 cm (1/4 of the basic module), the glass is laid cold in the concrete. With this frame the architect aimed not only at a rain and sun-protection function, but also wanted to restore the human scale to the building. The prefabricated board-marked concrete elements mainly comprise the main stairwell, the emergency stairwell, the facade window elements of the south, east and west facades, the facade cladding (43.75 x 87.5 cm) and the balustrade panels in the wooden interior screens. The emergency stairwell is located in the round shaft on the north side.
The roof of the former gymnasium on the top storey is designed as a parabola and consists of a fusée-ceramique structure. The roof of the former canteen, also on the top storey, is a cylindrical concrete shell roof. The structures on the roof (lift machine room, chimneys and the like) are executed in concrete and expressively shaped.
On the left side of the building, on the side of the Vrolikstraat, there is a staff entrance under the canopy. The ramp provides access for students who enter the building via the basement with bicycle storage and cloakroom.
The incorporation of monumental wall art in architecture is characteristic of the Post-War Reconstruction period. The bronze sculpture on the front facade is by sculptor W. Reijers, the concrete reliefs by the ramp and in the interior are by artist Harry op de Laak. The reliefs in the interior are located in the former canteen on the top storey, the main stairwell and above the entrances of the lecture halls. In the current situation these reliefs are painted with colours which in their tone suggest dating from the construction period. However, photographs from the construction period show that these reliefs were originally unpainted and contrast was achieved precisely through shadow effects. The only exception to this are the reliefs in the former canteen. An explicit reference to Le Corbusier is the concrete relief on the external wall, next to the stairs to the basement: the 'Modulor' depicted as a construction worker with a concrete mixer.
A bronze sculpture is affixed to the closed facade section along the Wibautstraat. This sculpture, resembling outstretched hands, was created by sculptor W. Reijers. It was designed in 1956 but only placed in the late 1970s after it had hung on the facade of the Second Christian LTS Patrimonium in Amsterdam West for more than ten years.
In the interior the concrete frame is left exposed, the walls consist of fair-faced brickwork and the bays are filled with painted, pitch-pine screens and a balustrade height of 1.30 m. This was to allow cupboards to be placed under this balustrade without obstructing the free view. The finish of the floors is executed differently according to the function of the space. The materials used have remained recognisable and conduits are not concealed: the underlying thought was that the building itself could serve as instructive learning material for the students.
Valuation
The building is of general importance:
- on account of the ensemble value as the principal complex component of the design whereby the external grounds were deliberately included in the design process and must be considered as an integral whole with the building itself;
- on account of the architectural-historical value as a Dutch tribute to Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation;
- on account of the architectural-historical value as a particularly fine example of the innovative use of concrete and concrete elements;
- on account of the exceptional application of monumental wall art and facade reliefs in and outside the building, designed in conjunction with the building by Dutch artists;
- on account of the integrity of interior and exterior in principal form, material use and detailing;
- on account of the coherence with the other complex components.
