Inleiding
- als uiting van de opkomst van de verzorgingsstaat in de periode van de wederopbouw;
- door de aanwezigheid van monumentale kunst van Hildo Krop;
- vanwege de markante ligging in de nabijheid van het spoorwegstation Den Haag Hollands Spoor;
- door de situationele waarde met het beeldbepalende silhouet;
Bremer.

Description
Introduction
The STATION POST OFFICE stands at the railway, on the corner of Waldorpstraat and Rijswijkseweg. The building is erected on a T-shaped floor plan. Since the PTT was a state enterprise until 1989, all post offices were designed for a long time by the Government Buildings Service. The station post office is therefore a design by G.C. Bremer, chief government architect from 1924 to 1945. Bremer designed the station post office in 1939 in collaboration with structural engineers J. Emmen and H.J.J. Engel. Construction began in 1940 and after work was halted in 1942, it resumed after the war to be completed in 1949, except for finishing work. It is the last completed work by Bremer, who has a series of post offices to his name of various sizes and in different styles. The sculptures on the exterior facade were designed around 1946 by Hildo Krop. The location of the post office at the railway still shows that for a long time, since the middle of the nineteenth century, the railway was used for the distribution of mail. In 1997 the railway was replaced by lorry transport. This eliminated the need for station post offices. In the 1980s of the twentieth century, an office was added to the station post office, designed by Kraaijvanger Architecten. The office was connected to the existing post office by means of three air bridges. The station post office became what was known as an Expeditie Knoop Punt (Expedition Junction Point). The Expeditie Knoop Punten were intended to achieve even more efficient and economical distribution and were in fact a continuation of the station post offices. In the same period the existing post office was thoroughly refurbished. The window frames and the surfaces with glass bricks were all replaced between 1987 and 1990. This was done under the direction of architect R.A.L.M. Ligtvoet. Three of the four high storeys were split horizontally, whereby on one storey the original height was retained through the application of a void.
The building adjacent to the station post office from the 1980s of the twentieth century falls, together with the three air bridges, outside the scope of national protection.
Description
The STATION POST OFFICE is erected on a T-shaped floor plan and has a height of approximately 45 m. The somewhat curved roof of the wide section is fitted with a series of shed roofs, which were later blinded. The facades are mainly made of yellow glazed brick and surfaces of glass bricks set in concrete square frames, alternated with window frames. The design of the facades is tailored to the different functions of the building parts, whereby through corresponding use of materials and module the building is perceived as a unit. Although the rhythm differs from the original design, through the use of glass bricks as also in the original design and in the existing module, the starting point and image value are retained. On the ground floor French limestone is applied as a special accent. The building is founded on a concrete slab and has a reinforced concrete structure, supported by a row of columns on each storey. The spaces are freely divisible.
The narrower wing on the Rijswijkseweg has a representative character that is emphasised by the monumental semi-circular termination. In this building part with eight storeys office functions are accommodated in particular, except on the ground floor where a public post office was located among other things. The plinth therefore also has its own design, differing from the office storeys above, which continues in the semi-circular extension, originally a flower kiosk. In this office wing proportionally more glazed brick is used than in the perpendicular wing. On the corner four sculptures are placed one above the other on the facade according to a design by Hildo Krop. The highest placed sculpture is a man with a torch, further a female figure with a dove (aviation), a woman with a ship (shipping) and a woman with a railway switch (rail traffic). Below the last sculpture five smaller figures are sculpted representing the continents.
At the wider wing on the Waldorp side the emphasis is on functionality. This is where mail processing took place. The post was sorted from the top storey downwards and subsequently distributed from the ground floor. Striking is the original, substantial height of the halls. The use of large transport and sorting machines made this necessary. Where the office section, which is equally high, has eight storeys, this building part originally consisted of only four storeys, as is also readable from the facade. The facades are largely provided with glass bricks, alternated with frames, so that the work halls were well lit. The plinth differs in design. Here black brick is used. On the right is the door for cars with behind it the unloading and loading area. The entrance more towards the middle was originally for bicycles. The facade is terminated by a copper moulding with a series of round windows. This wing tapers somewhat and is wider on the side of the office wing and narrower towards the semi-circular termination. This semi-circular termination is crowned by a round space in which the restaurant was accommodated.
Assessment
The STATION POST OFFICE is of general importance because of its architectural-historical, cultural-historical and urban planning value:
- as an expression of the rise of the welfare state in the period of post-war reconstruction;
- through the high quality architectural merit of the building and the use of materials, in which the function of respectively sorting wing and office wing is readable in the design of the facades;
- through the presence of monumental art by Hildo Krop;
- because of the prominent location in the vicinity of Den Haag Hollands Spoor railway station;
- through the situational value with the image-defining silhouette;
- as the last executed design of chief government architect G.C. Bremer.
