Inleiding
AANLEG van het processiepark te Handel. Achter en naast de kerk aan de oostrand van het dorp ligt het processiepark, dat vanaf 1902 door Rector L. van Laarschot werd aangelegd. In het zuiden wordt het park begrensd door de Kapelweg, de westzijde van het park gaat over in het terrein rondom de kerk. Aan oost- en noordzijde strekken zich achter het park landerijen en bos uit. In het park bevinden zich enkele elementen die niet onder de bescherming vallen: het openluchtaltaar, de muziekkiosk, een aantal sculpturen uit de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw en de graftekens op de begraafplaats in de zuidelijke hoek. Aan de achterzijde in het park is een begraafplaats aangelegd die eveneens buiten de bescherming valt.
Omschrijving
De AANLEG van het processiepark is rechthoekig. Het park is vrijwel geheel door een houtwal omgeven. Het heeft kenmerken van de Engelse landschapsstijl en wordt ontsloten door toegangswegen langs de kerk. Het terrein is voorzien van een omlopend pad, parallel aan de grenzen. Binnen deze structuur is een pad met een slingerend verloop aangelegd. Iets links van het midden ligt de "toegang" tot het park, die gemarkeerd wordt door twee pijlers met daarop knielende ENGELEN. Daarachter strekt zich een rechte as uit die tot diep in het park doorloopt. Langs het pad aan de rand van het park bevinden zich vijftien kapellen met "geheimen van de Rozenkrans" (Rozenkransweg) en één grotere Benedictiekapel. Aan het slingerende pad zijn de kruiswegstaties geplaatst. Verspreid door het park staan enkele BLOEMBAKKEN in vaasvorm en BANKJES van kunststeen.
Rechts van de centrale as, vooraan in het park, is een groot reliëf met een voorstelling van de bruiloft te Kana geplaatst. Daarachter bevindt zich een kleine begraafplaats.
Links, vrijstaand in het park staat het "Heilig Putje",
Schuin daarachter, met de achtergevel grenzend aan het pad is in de jaren '50 van de twintigste eeuw een openluchtaltaar gebouwd, Iets verderop staat een achtkantige muziekkiosk en verspreid door het park staat een aantal op zichzelf staande sculpturen uit de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw.
De beplanting bestaat uit diverse struiken, onder andere rododendron en bomen zoals eiken, rode beuk, kastanje en diverse naaldbomen.
Waardering
De AANLEG van het processiepark is van algemeen belang. Hij heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als uitdrukking van een geestelijke ontwikkeling en als toonbeeld van de Mariadevotie in Brabant. Daarnaast is de aanleg van typologisch belang als onderdeel van een processiepark uit de vroege twintigste eeuw. Het park heeft ensemblewaarden vanwege de situering en de samenhang met het kerkgebouw en de relatie met de ontwikkeling van Handel als bedevaartsoord en kloosternederzetting.

LAYOUT of the processional park at Handel. Behind and beside the church on the eastern edge of the village lies the processional park, which was laid out from 1902 onwards by Rector L. van Laarschot. To the south the park is bounded by the Kapelweg, the west side of the park transitions into the grounds around the church. To the east and north, behind the park, extend fields and woodland. In the park there are several elements that do not fall under protection: the open-air altar, the music kiosk, a number of sculptures from the second half of the twentieth century and the grave markers in the burial ground in the southern corner. An open-air cemetery has been laid out at the rear of the park which is likewise outside the protection.
Description
The LAYOUT of the processional park is rectangular. The park is almost entirely surrounded by a hedgerow. It has characteristics of the English landscape style and is accessed by pathways along the church. The ground is provided with a perimeter path, parallel to the boundaries. Within this structure a path with a meandering course has been laid out. Slightly to the left of the middle lies the "entrance" to the park, which is marked by two pillars topped with kneeling ANGELS. Beyond this a straight axis extends that runs deep into the park. Along the path at the edge of the park there are fifteen chapels with "mysteries of the Rosary" (Rosary Way) and one larger Benediction Chapel. The stations of the cross have been placed along the meandering path. Scattered through the park are several FLOWER BEDS in vase form and BENCHES of artificial stone.
To the right of the central axis, at the front of the park, a large relief depicting the wedding at Cana has been placed. Behind it there is a small burial ground.
On the left, standing alone in the park is the "Holy Well".
Slightly behind it, with its rear facade adjoining the path, an open-air altar was built in the 1950s of the twentieth century. A little further on stands an octagonal music kiosk and scattered through the park are several freestanding sculptures from the second half of the twentieth century.
The planting consists of various shrubs, including rhododendron and trees such as oaks, copper beech, chestnut and various conifers.
Valuation
The LAYOUT of the processional park is of general significance. It has cultural-historical value as an expression of spiritual development and as an exemplar of Marian devotion in Brabant. Furthermore the layout is of typological significance as part of a processional park from the early twentieth century. The park has ensemble values because of its situation and coherence with the church building and the relationship with the development of Handel as a pilgrimage site and convent settlement.
