Omschrijving onderdeel 3:
VLUCHTBURCHT genaamd Spaanse Graven. Waarschijnlijk in de jaren 1587-1588, toen de Spanjaarden zich enkele maanden in de omgeving ophielden, een door hen aangelegde aarden schans, die circa een halve kilometer ten zuidoosten van de wijer van Molecaten, pal achter het spijker Watervlied, is gesitueerd. De naamgeving Spaanse Graven moet hoogstwaarschijnlijk gelezen worden als "de Spaansen (=zelfstandig naamwoord=Spanjaarden) graven (werkwoord)". De aanleg bestaat uit een vrijwel rechthoekig terrein, dat in het midden een iets verhoogd plateau kent, waaromheen een pad. Het terrein wordt aan de oost-, west-, en noordzijde door een enkele wal en aan de zuidzijde door een dubbele wal afgesloten. De wallen zijn circa 2 meter hoog. De dubbele zuidelijke wal zet zich in westelijke richting een stuk door. Tussen de dubbele wallen een waterloop, waartoe in het bos in meer westelijke richting een spreng is aangeboord en kanaal is uitgegraven, zoals nu nog te zien is. De waterloop voert langs de oostzijde van de burcht en vervolgens langs de west- en zuidzijde van het erf van Spijker Watervlied. Eind 19de eeuw werd de schans met beuken beplant.

Description of component 3:
REFUGE FORTIFICATION called Spaanse Graven. Probably in the years 1587-1588, when the Spanish forces were in the area for several months, an earthen entrenchment laid out by them, which is situated approximately half a kilometre south-east of the pond of Molecaten, immediately behind the granary Watervlied. The naming Spaanse Graven should almost certainly be read as "the Spanish (=noun=Spaniards) dig (verb)". The construction consists of a virtually rectangular area which has a slightly raised plateau in the middle, around which is a path. The area is enclosed on the east, west, and north sides by a single bank and on the south side by a double bank. The banks are approximately 2 metres high. The double southern bank continues for some distance in a westerly direction. Between the double banks a watercourse, to which a spring was tapped in the wood in a more westerly direction and a canal was excavated, as can still be seen now. The watercourse runs along the east side of the fortification and subsequently along the west and south side of the plot of Granary Watervlied. At the end of the 19th century the entrenchment was planted with beech trees.
