The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 24: WERKPLAATS, Gebouw A11-133/167/168.

Inleiding

Description of component 24: WORKSHOP, Building A11-133/167/168.

Introduction

WORKSHOP A11, part of the Artillery Installations, was built during the second construction phase on the Hembrug site between 1916 and 1921 and is located on the west side of the A-cluster on the east side of the site. A11 is part of the cluster of A-buildings constructed as offices, workshops and staff space. In fact, the building is an assembly of 3 parallel workshops: building 133 (weapon repair workshop, gun workshop and machine gun assembly), building 167 (workshop/spray painting facility in wartime and later office) and building 168 (sheet metal workshop, later office).

Description

The workshop complex has a rectangular floor plan with a total area of 57.70 x 30.90 meters and consists of three raised structural volumes interspersed with low aisles. The volumes are physically connected to each other, but in the interior are somewhat separated from each other by brick walls with passages. The ridge direction of all volumes is east-west. The building is constructed in steel skeleton construction, but the raised roof structures (basilica form) all have a wooden skeleton. The internal steel structure consists of 16 trusses running from north to south, but in the extension they are placed perpendicular to this direction. The H-beams of the steel structure are composed of connected T-beams, presumably as a result of the unavailability of the correct materials during and after the First World War.

The building has in principle one storey.

The raised volumes all have a raised spout gable on the east and west sides and protruding brickwork on both sides at the base of the spout.

The three raised sections behind the spout gables, of which the central one is wider than the outer two, have a wooden gabled roof covered with bitumen and many translucent corrugated sheets. The low aisles have a lean-to roof and the wooden extension on the east side a flat roof, all of wood covered with bitumen. The side walls of the raised sections are provided with green wooden louver sections in which ventilation grilles are fitted.

The facades are constructed in grey brick laid in stretcher bond. No gutters have been installed: these are worked into the facades and only the rainwater downpipes are visible on the outside.

The east facade (canal side) has 9 window bays. Described from left to right: first a set of three coupled 15-pane windows, then a wooden and stone extension on the ground floor of the left spout gable (with a large door in the middle and windows on either side), then again a set of three coupled 15-pane windows, a single window and a glazed door with three-pane fanlight, then two sets of each two coupled 15-pane windows and finally three sets of three coupled 15-pane windows. The middle one of these last three sets is located in a plastered filled rectangular opening where presumably an extension once stood.

In the three spout gables, a coupled window is each time placed in the middle, each consisting of two 12-pane windows with a recessed plastered surface on either side of it.

On the gable west facade there is a low brick extension along the entire width of the structural volumes. The extension is 9 window bays long. Described from left to right: in the left wing first two wooden coupled 15-pane windows with fanlight under arch, a brick extension with a filled double door in the middle of two single 15-pane windows under arch. In the recessed middle section 4 pairs of coupled window units each consisting of two wooden 15-pane windows under arch. In the right stone extension two pairs of coupled window units each consisting of two 15-pane windows under arch. Under all windows there are two damp-proof courses, one of which is lower, which suggests that the windows have been reduced in size at some point.

The south facade has 18 window bays of always two coupled 15-pane windows and the adjoining extension has a coupled window unit consisting of three 15-pane windows. Here too there are two damp-proof courses under the windows, which indicates a reduction in window size. In the south facade there is also a set of double wooden doors with a small sign reading "A11" to the left of it and a later extension built in stone and wood under a lean-to roof with window and glazed door.

The north facade has 19 window bays. In each bay there are two coupled 15-pane windows under an arch with three sets of double doors in the 6th, 12th and 19th bay. The 13th bay is largely filled in with a small 4-pane window.

In the interior, which consists of many rooms, a large number of modifications have been made. The internal walls also have series of windows.

Valuation

The former WORKSHOP A11 is of cultural, military and architectural historical value as an example of a military maintenance workshop built in traditionalist style during the Interwar period and is also important as a historical-functional component of the Amsterdam Defence Line, more particularly the A-cluster on the Hembrug site.
