Omschrijving onderdeel 23: Gebouw A8 (138) en A9 (137)

Inleiding

Description of component 23: Building A8 (138) and A9 (137)

Introduction

BUILDING A8/A9 consisting of the former CANTEEN (A8-138) and former WASHING AND CHANGING ROOM (A9-137), located on the east side of the Hembrug site and built between 1916 and 1921. Building A8 is physically connected to A9 on its east side. The canteen later served as a classroom and the washing and changing room also served as a storeroom and wagon workshop and later became the storeroom for the canteen with archive space at the rear. Both buildings are part of Hembrug Artillery Installations and the A-cluster in particular. The A-cluster contained buildings that served as maintenance workshops, offices and staff facilities. Military personnel working in this cluster had to eat and change in A8/A9, this was forbidden elsewhere within the cluster and other clusters were too far away. The building therefore held a central place as staff facilities for the A-cluster.

Description

Buildings A8 and A9 together form a T-shaped structure. A8 is the short upper part and A9 the long part standing across it. Both parts are described separately below, but form a physical whole.

Building A8 has a rectangular floor plan with an area of 28.00 x 10.00 metres.

The building is constructed in timber framing filled with brick and a wooden skeleton structure still visible in the interior. A8 has a raised central section under a gabled roof (basilica-form).

The half-brick walls are laid in stretcher bond and in the timber-framed sections two bricks are regularly placed vertically with the short end facing forward as a decorative element. Decorative brickwork is also applied in other ways.

In the raised central section the side walls were originally provided with bands of windows, but are now sealed with wooden panels.

On the north and south sides of A8 the basilica-form is clearly visible. The facades consist of 4 bays but on the west side the roof is extended with an extra bay for the veranda. In both facades, seen from left to right, a single 15-pane window, two paired 15-pane windows, a rolling door (south side) or double door (north side) and another two paired 15-pane windows are installed. In the raised section two paired 12-pane windows are installed. Above the double door on the north side formerly hung a sign marked "Cantine" and to the right of the doors a sign marked "A8".

The west facade has 10 window bays with wooden 20-pane windows of which the top four are each fanlights in yellow glass. Under the same roof a veranda is installed for this facade whose roof is supported by wooden square pillars standing on a low continuous wall.

The east facade adjoins A9 but has three bays on either side with 20-pane windows in the timber-framed sections.

Building A9 is also constructed in timber framing filled with brick. It is built on a rectangular floor plan (26.00 x 10.00 metres) and consists of one storey under a very slightly sloping gabled roof with bitumen whose ridge runs east-west. The half-brick walls are laid in stretcher bond and in the timber-framed sections two bricks are regularly placed vertically with the short end facing forward as a decorative element. A wooden rainwater gutter runs around the building on wooden blocks.

On the gabled facade on the east side of Building A9, in the timber-framed sections irregularly a pair of opening double doors and a pair of wooden rolling doors are placed amidst three wooden 9-pane windows. A sign with the number A9 is placed to the left of the rolling doors.

The long south and north facades each consist of 20 window bays with (partly paired) 9-pane windows regularly placed in the wooden framing. The facades do have a walk-through door with a six-pane fanlight in the sixth bay and a sealed door with a six-pane fanlight in the fifteenth bay.

Valuation

BUILDING A8/A9 consisting of the former CANTEEN A8 and WASHING AND CHANGING ROOM A9 is of cultural, military and architectural-historical value as an example of a personnel building constructed in a traditionalist style on a military factory site from the Interwar period and is also important as a historical-functional component of the Amsterdam Defence Line, more particularly the A-cluster on the Hembrug site.
