Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 21: Munitiemagazijn, Gebouw M8-299.
Inleiding

Description
Description of component 21: Ammunition magazine, Building M8-299.
Introduction
The former AMMUNITION MAGAZINE M8 (299) is part of the Sectorpark Zaandam cluster and was built in 1917 (another source mentions 1932 as the year of construction) for the storage of ammunition. The Sectorpark Zaandam was part of the Stelling van Amsterdam and is located in the northeastern part of the Hembrug site. The Sectorpark Amsterdam was discontinued in the 1950s. This section was separated by a fence from the Military Terrain and the buildings had no relationship with the state enterprise Artillerie-Inrichtingen. The Sectorpark had its own entrance on the side of the Zijkanaal G and its own landing dock.
Although there are two types of ammunition magazines - two large and two small buildings - these are not identical in layout. Post-war lightning conductors have been installed around the buildings of the entire cluster.
The ammunition magazines are mutually separated by (originally unplanted) earthen protective embankments of approximately 4 metres in height, which together form a cross. The cluster is also separated by an earthen embankment from the adjacent A-building cluster. Around M6-M9 there was a narrow-gauge railway, now disappeared, with branches to the buildings. In buildings M8-299 and M9-301 remains of this can still be found in the interior as well as turntables, walkway trolleys and hoisting installations.
Description
The building has a rectangular ground plan with an area of 14.20 x 42.20 metres and is constructed of reinforced concrete with slightly recessed wall surfaces between the columns. The walls are plastered and painted grey. The former ventilation openings in the walls have been sealed. In the rear facade, above the door, the beginning of vertical iron bars can still be seen which made a ventilation opening inaccessible. In the left side facade, the beginning of horizontal bars can be seen at the sealed ventilation openings.
The very gently sloping roof is covered with concrete and bitumen and is characterised by an overhang. The roof is set as a light structure somewhat loosely on top with a view to possible explosions (so-called blast roof).
In the front facade (south) there are four pairs of double sliding steel doors (from the 1980s), formerly wooden doors. The numbers 1/4 are marked on the doors in white paint. Via these doors the building formerly connected at 4 points to the narrow-gauge railway. Above door 1 hangs a sign with M8 marked on it. The right side facade (east) is closed with a view to the earthen embankment. Traces of the sealed ventilation openings can still be seen here. In the rear facade (north) three pairs of doors have been installed, the most westerly of which still contains wooden clamped doors. However, this is probably not the original door because the current style in the middle does not allow for the central run of the narrow-gauge railway. The left side facade (south) is closed but is also articulated by columns.
The interior currently consists of a corridor and six rooms containing the concrete trusses with beam layer on which the roof rests. On the walls the board and grain structure is still visible in the concrete. In some rooms later partition walls of white brick have been placed. In the concrete exterior walls the ventilation openings closeable with wooden shutters are still visible. The wooden clamped double sliding interior doors are still original.
In the concrete floor there are still rails from the ammunition lorries including turntables, as well as walkway trolleys and hoisting installations.
Valuation
The former AMMUNITION MAGAZINE M8 (299) is of cultural, military and architectural historical value as an example of a concrete military magazine from the first half of the 20th century and is also of importance as a historically-functional component of the Stelling van Amsterdam, in particular the former Sectorpark Zaandam on the Hembrug site.
