The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 12: Gebouw 218.

Inleiding

Description of component 12: Building 218.

Introduction

The former BOILER PLANT "Building 218" was built around 1930 as part of the later NV Gereedschapswerktuigen Industrie Hembrug. The boiler plant supplied heat and energy (steam) to both the civil factory and the ammunition and weapons factory. The object is therefore not embedded in a specific building cluster, but was part of all clusters. Only the A-cluster was later supplied with energy by its own boiler plant A10.

Building 218 was the beating heart of the Hembrug site and continued to function until closure in 2003. The object is located in the southwestern part of the site.

Description

Building 218 is built on a rectangular ground plan with an area of 45.00 x 20.00 metres and consists of three adjoining building volumes with staggered heights and flat roofs. On the roofs of the later extensions, a total of five roof lights have been installed in the east-west direction.

The northern section is the oldest structure. The building is constructed in steel skeleton construction with blue-painted timber-framing and a wall filling of 2 colours of brickwork.

In the north and east facades, high and wide window strips of varying size have been installed in each bay. In some cases, a pair of double steel doors is located below a window strip. High multi-pane windows and one pair of steel double doors have also been installed in the west facade.

The middle section is a later extension and projects slightly in relation to the northern section. This section is also constructed in steel skeleton construction and has very large (6, 48 or 54) multi-pane windows in both the east and west facades.

The southern section is an extension from circa 1950-1956 in the same style and construction method as the other two building volumes, but is considerably larger. It extends in the north-south direction over 11 window bays. All bays have two multi-pane windows placed one above the other, but the most southern one has an access door on the ground floor.

Valuation

The former boiler plant "Building 218" is of cultural and architectural-historical value as an example of an energy plant on a military-industrial site from the Interwar period with later extensions and is also significant as a historically-functional main component of the Hembrug complex.
