Inleiding

Introduction

Former ARMS DEPOT "Building 8", component of the Hembrugterrein complex - Artillery Installations Hembrug, dating from 1899 and erected in neo-Renaissance architectural style. The object, officially intended for 'storage of weapons', belongs to the oldest preserved buildings of the factory and is located on the western part of the site intended for the machine factory. Around 1938 the depot was converted into an office. The interior and the main entrance were redesigned in the nineteen fifties in a design reminiscent of the work of architect S. van Ravensteijn. The original roof covering of "wood cement" sheets has been removed.

Description

Originally an arms depot building converted into an office, built on an almost square plan and consisting of two storeys under largely shallow-pitched roof with a narrow iron skylight in the north-south axis. The block-like mass is founded on a timber pile grid and upon it piers of cement concrete and mortared spandrel arches. The building is erected with cavity walls laid in alternating bond in grey brick with the application of yellow brick and natural stone blocks around the windows and in the band work. The internal structure consists of 32 iron columns extending to the roof between which a wooden floor beam layer is suspended on iron beams.

The north and south facades consist of eight window bays and the east and west facades of nine window bays in slightly recessed fields. The wooden windows have a six-pane glazing bar division with a round-arched field on the ground floor and a cock's comb on the upper storey. On the inside there are similarly divided wooden storm windows. The roof has a narrow wooden gutter moulding.

The front facade (north) was provided upon conversion to office with a new entrance section in the middle of the facade, consisting of a curved step and inward-curving portal executed in steel and glass which leads to a porter's lodge and a spacious staircase. On the ground floor there is a built-in Lips safe and on the upper storey the remainder of the cabinet wall of the drawing office.

Valuation

The former arms depot "Building 8" is of general importance due to its cultural and architectural historical value as an example of an industrial building from the end of the 19th century with the added value of the conversion into an office in the second quarter of the twentieth century. The object is also of importance as a historical-functional component of the Hembrugterrein complex, built in the first phase of the factory.
