Omschrijving

Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The historic park layout of Strijpemonde is situated in the estate of the same name, which originally dates back to the 15th century. The estate is located and covers a large part of the polder Windgat, which as a comital possession was granted for dyking in 1479. Originally the terrain was bounded on the west side by the Pietersdijk, but through dune accretion in the last 3 centuries the estate and part of the historic garden and park layout now present there extends considerably to the west of the Pietersdijk. The main building, country house Strijpemonde, was built as the centre of this historic garden and park layout on a line of the Pietersdijk. Although agricultural enterprise within the polder took place in the 18th century or earlier (building traces from the third decade of the 18th century are preserved of the farmhouse Schaapskooi which belonged to the layout), it could only really develop around 1800, when an opening through the dunes to the sea was closed and the water management of the area became manageable. The characteristic plot pattern of the polder in narrow straight strips with drainage ditches between them dates from around 1800. Before 1819 (Cadastral Plan) a large-scale rectangular wood was laid out directly to the west and southwest of farmhouse Schaapskooi. The layout consisting of large rectangular sections of woodland, with watercourses and avenues along and between the sections, was planted after the subdivision of the polder: the characteristic subdivision pattern is namely still recognizable as the foundation of the wood. The planting of the wood initially took place to protect the meadows between the wood and the Noorderdijk lying to the south of it against sand drift, but probably also to offer protection to the meadows to the east of the Noorderdijk against sand drift. Furthermore, the timber yield of the wood was used for the ovens of bakeries. In the 19th century the wood gradually acquired a more park-like planting, as evidenced by the oak and beech trees still present from the first half of the 19th century. Around the time of the construction of country house Strijpemonde in 1937-1938, the owner James van Hoey Smith, possibly working partly with the architect of the house J.W. Janzen, who was also a family friend, had an extensive park layout in landscape style laid out around the country house. Directly to the north of farmhouse Schaapskooi, a winding driveway through the wood to the house was laid out. In the open park meadow between country house and wood the driveway received a characteristic avenue planting of alternating three oaks and three birches. In the wood a loose pattern of winding paths and avenues was laid out. The wood was enriched with, among other things, a new beech avenue with brown and golden beech alternating, oak and beech alternating in the wood sections, various types of holly (fodder for roe deer) and bamboo. In the wood a pond was also dug in landscape style and beside the pond a viewing mound was raised. In the park meadow between the house and the wood a very spacious pond was laid out in landscape style. The excavation of the pond was done with wheelbarrows as part of a public works project. At the west side of the house a new park wood was planted in the manner of the wood on the east side: intersected with winding paths and in the wood sections among other things oak and beech alternating, with holly as underplanting. Furthermore, space was left in this part for the development of more specific coastal dune vegetation. To the south of the house, near the forest keeper's dwelling, a pinetum was planted, named Klein Siberië. The entire park was planted by James van Hoey Smith with rare exotic tree species, including rare conifers and cork oak near the driveway behind the house. Around 1960 an avenue of Metasequoia was laid out in the wood on the east side.
