In de nabijheid van Huis Sonsbeek gelegen LORENTZMONUMENT, in 1931 opgericht ter ere van de in Arnhem geboren natuurkundige en nobelprijswinnaar (1902) Henrik Antoon Lorentz (1853-1928). Het monument is een ontwerp van de beeldhouwer Ludwig Oswald Wenckebach (1895-1962) en uitgevoerd in een mengvorm van stijlkenmerken uit de Nieuwe Zakelijkheid en Art Deco.
Het monument bestaat uit een kern van baksteen, bekleed met rechthoekige blokken euvillekalksteen van verschillende formaten, die tezamen een symmetrisch opgezet geheel vormen. De middenpartij is hoger opgetrokken; de lage vleugels steken schuin naar voren. Voor de middenpartij staat een grote sokkel, waarop een frontaal gericht bronzen standbeeld is geplaatst van H.A. Lorentz. Op de sokkel in gebeeldhouwde letters het opschrift: 'HENDRIK ANTOON/ LORENTZ/ 1853 1928/. De voet van het beeld bezit op de rechterzijde de inscriptie 'A. PROWASECK KUNSTGIETERIJ LEIDEN', op de linker zijde 'WENCKEBACH 1931'. De vleugels bezitten elk drie langwerpige reliëfs van beroemde natuurkundigen: op de linker vleugel HUYGENS, FRESNEL en MAXWELL en op de rechter vleugel PLANCK, EINSTEIN en BOHR. Deze natuurkundigen zijn 'en profil' afgebeeld en gericht naar het standbeeld van Lorentz. De namen van de natuurkundigen staan boven de lege vakken uiterst links en rechts aangegeven. LORENTZ MONUMENT located in the vicinity of Huis Sonsbeek, erected in 1931 in honour of the physicist and Nobel Prize winner (1902) Henrik Antoon Lorentz (1853-1928), born in Arnhem. The monument is a design by sculptor Ludwig Oswald Wenckebach (1895-1962) and executed in a hybrid form of stylistic features from the Neue Sachlichkeit and Art Deco.
The monument consists of a core of brick, clad with rectangular blocks of euville limestone of various sizes, which together form a symmetrically arranged whole. The central section is built higher; the low wings slope forward. In front of the central section stands a large plinth, on which a frontally oriented bronze statue is placed of H.A. Lorentz. On the plinth in sculptured letters the inscription: 'HENDRIK ANTOON/ LORENTZ/ 1853 1928/. The foot of the statue has on the right side the inscription 'A. PROWASECK KUNSTGIETERIJ LEIDEN', on the left side 'WENCKEBACH 1931'. The wings each contain three elongated reliefs of famous physicists: on the left wing HUYGENS, FRESNEL and MAXWELL and on the right wing PLANCK, EINSTEIN and BOHR.
