Inleiding

PARK- EN TUINAANLEG van complex Sanatorium De Klokkenberg, ontworpen door J.T.P. Bijhouwer.

Introduction

PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT of the complex Sanatorium De Klokkenberg, designed by J.T.P. Bijhouwer. The style of the park is Modern-Business. The planting made use of traditional species such as field maple, rowan, linden and birch. The park and garden layout was integrated into the landscape using existing structures such as wooded banks, copses and tree-lined avenues. In addition, agricultural installations and elements were incorporated into the layout, which also aimed to provide food for patients and staff, such as vegetable gardens for the religious sisters at the convent house, a standard-form fruit orchard at the boiler house and espalier fruit trees in the niches of the covered walkway between the convent house and the western nursing wing. On the southeast side of the nursing wings, ornamental flower-beds formed the boundary between the meadows and the layout around the sanatorium. On the meadow side these were provided with the still-present low beech hedges as a backing. Such hedges formed no visual boundary at the larger scale, allowing the landscape to remain open. Around 1970 the Mark was straightened, whereby the large-scale, picturesque meanders disappeared. The paths were initially oriented towards the building facades and run parallel to the axis of the complex or diagonally and at right angles to it. An exception to this is formed by the drive from the vanished roundabout. Characteristic of Bijhouwer's work is the slightly curved path that ran from the boiler house to the eastern connecting wing of the second courtyard. Elements such as the beech avenue that runs along the nursing wings and a circle of trees between the nursing wings in the Mark do not belong to the original layout and have disrupted the relationship essential in the design between the nursing wings and the view from them towards the open space of the Markdal. The layout has also been modified in several places by the addition of car parks. The rectangular water feature that had been laid out in a sunken lawn in the courtyard at the main entrance has been removed. J.T.P. (Jan Tijs Pieter) Bijhouwer (1898-1974) was the first professor of landscape architecture in Wageningen and the mentor of generations of landscape architects. His work had great influence on post-war thinking about cultural landscape. His philosophy of landscape renewal while preserving identity is expressed in the layout of the Klokkenberg.

Description

A layout consisting of a closed area with woodland rooms in the west and views over the Markdal with open areas in the south. Between them the large sanatorium building. The whole traversed by walking paths and avenues adapted to the buildings.

On the northwest side of the layout, along the Galderseweg, forest compartments have been laid out which screen the building complex De Klokkenberg from view. At right angles to the Galderseweg runs a drive westwards, lined with a double row of linden trees in triangular spacing. The end of this access road was formed by a roundabout, planted with trees, which formed the turning point of the drive. A path, accompanied by an old wooded bank, runs straight ahead to the secluded boiler house. Because the course of this path has been altered, the roundabout has, as it were, been flattened. The roundabout is the junction of a corner turn. The main axis of the complex runs from the roundabout diagonally to the right, towards the south. On this axis stands the chapel. In front of the chapel lies a grass field with paths on either side bordered by double rows of linden trees. The chapel dominates the entire forecourt because the other building parts are screened from view by planting. The route to the main entrance continues through the gates on either side of the chapel, reaching the first -paved- courtyard and subsequently the second courtyard. The courtyard has a grass field in the middle. Along the Galderseweg the transition from the Markbos to the open space is softened by the planting of coniferous trees here. The forest compartments laid out here function as green rooms. Next to the entrance is a forest compartment where in the open space a small transformer building stands. The open space is bordered by a low hedge of field maple. In the following courtyard stand rows of rowan trees. Running almost parallel to the Galderseweg is a birch avenue with field maple hedges. This avenue already existed and has been incorporated into the layout by Bijhouwer and planted. The southern boundary of the layout is formed by the original drive of the Schoondonk farm, which is also called Galderseweg. The avenue is planted with a double row of beeches in triangular spacing. Adjacent are plots with staff houses. On the outside of the convent house runs a path to the western nursing wing, with rowan trees alongside. In the niches of the western covered walkway grow espalier fruit trees. Along the southeast façade of the building, where the light halls were, stand whitebeams and beech hedges. The whitebeams filter the light for the light halls. The wings look out on a series of fields which form a transition from the building to the field pattern of the Markdal. Patients had from the nursing wings a pastoral view of the Schoondonk farm.
