Omschrijving onderdeel 2

- wegens de bijzondere en onregelmatige structuur van het landgoed bepaald door de natuurlijke terreinhoedanigheden;

- als duidelijk voorbeeld van een buitenplaats, met een uitgesproken historische gelaagdheid waarin de formele en landschappelijke stijl vertegenwoordigd en behouden zijn: de 19de-eeuwse landschappelijke parkaanleg en de 18de-eeuwse tuinornamenten en laangedeelten;

- als werk uit het oeuvre van de tuinarchitecten Zocher jr. en Wattez;

- als uniek voorbeeld van een buitenplaats met een groot aantal waterwerken, gevoed door stromend water;

- wegens enkele unieke onderdelen: de schelpengalerij en de bedriegertjes;

- wegens de grote invloed van de parkaanleg op de aanleg van parken van Nederlandse buitenplaatsen in de 17de, 18de en 19de eeuw;

- wegens de schoonheidswaarde;

Description of component 2

HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to Rosendael Castle. The structure of the park is determined by its location in the stream valley between two hill ridges and the presence of water basins dating from the foundation of the castle in the 14th century. In 1667 Jan van Arnhem (1632-1721), who as a confidant of the King-Stadtholder was counted among the court circle, became lord of Rosendael. Van Arnhem was an admirer and connoisseur of garden art and under his direction the estate, within the existing main structure determined by the height differences of the terrain and the direction of water flow, received a new garden layout. This main structure lent itself scarcely to a geometric arrangement of avenues, parterres and ponds along a central axis, which was then in fashion. First of all, a long approach drive on the central axis of the castle was lacking. The south-north running access avenue only turned towards the entrance in an east-west direction at a short distance from the house. Secondly, the ponds, which lay in a curved line behind the house, obstructed continuity of a central axis through the terrain. Van Arnhem divided the garden into different gardens, separated and enclosed by avenues, so that obtaining vistas clearly was not an objective. The individual components did however have a geometric layout in beds. Thanks to the natural presence of water, the requirements of a modern French garden could be met in the form of basins, fountains and cascades, as well as through various garden ornaments such as grottos and arbours and the layout of a Star Wood and maze. The friendly relationship with the royal couple and their frequent visits to Rosendael resulted in some building projects, such as the now vanished Belvedère for William III, a small court cabinet for the benefit of Mary Stuart and a new stable on the forecourt for the royal horses.

After the first steps towards landscape gardening of the park at the end of the 18th century and in the early 19th century, in the years 1836-1838 on the commission of A.L. Adolph Torck according to the design of J.D. Zocher jr. the entire park was regraded in landscape style, retaining a number of components from the formal layout from the first half of the 18th century. The composition of this landscape park is determined by undulating grass areas and water features running in curves. These areas are edged and intersected by narrow shell and gravel paths, which wind around deliberately placed shrubs and tree groups. The vegetation is planted so that vistas and perspective are obtained over the grass and water areas. Also prominently placed buildings play a role as focal points for sight lines, such as the Orangery and the Logement on the Smidsberg. This latter, elevated point also became important as a viewpoint over the park and castle. On the other hand, the clusters of shrubs and tree groups and the specific placement of specimens such as the tulip tree, giant arborvitae (Thuja plicata), columnar cypress (Libocedrus) create a coulisse-like effect. Variation in the colour palette is achieved by alternating the green with some red trees. The forest on the east and north side and the tall trees on the west and south side provide a dark background and termination of the vista over the park. Several important straight axes from the formal layout period are still clearly perceptible and intersect the landscape park. From the centre of the Star Hill dating from the formal layout period on the western side of the park runs a 17th-century main axis towards the east towards Koningsberg. The structure of the Star Wood, although obscured by vegetation, is still present. Between the Star Wood and the third pond lies a small oval basin, which in the 18th-century layout was a square-based basin. Two small, old watercourses flow through the park which feed the fountains and water features. From the spring head west of the third pond flows the spring stream, which runs parallel to the aforementioned slanting axis and subsequently continues in the winding Hunters' Stream (Zocher layout) towards the south-east of the park to end behind the shell gallery. Another small channel, the Mill Stream begins at the height of the second pond, passes under the shell gallery and flows out via a rapid of stones and pebbles into the trunk of the first pond, after which it is discharged by a waterfall into a small round basin beside the gardener's lodge. Remarkable is that in Zocher's concept of the park a number of elements remaining from the 18th-century formal garden—such as the garden pavilion and shell gallery—retained a prominent position and that elements were added in this manner, including water management works and an ornamental shell wall behind the mock grottoes. The cascade with river gods originally placed for the shell gallery was relocated to the north side of the third pond in landscape style. East of the second pond is a game cellar which, constructed from rough brick and overgrown by forest soil, in contrast to the 18th-century garden ornaments is entirely inconspicuous and has a romantic, ruinous character. The rose garden of L.A. Springer as a connecting element between the approach drive, castle and orangery was reconstructed in 1985 after the destruction of 1945 according to the situation from 1904.

From 1874 the landscape architect Dirk Wattez on commission of the owner of Rosendael carried out on the terrain of Koningsberg a plan for landscape-style layout and a parcellation plan for villas, which has been preserved intact. With the plan the Smidsberg with the buildings standing above it, which were previously directed primarily at the layout directly around the castle, were connected via winding paths and an extended axis to Koningsberg. Wattez's plan and its execution indicate the division at the moment when Koningsberg with its associated layout transformed from a component of the country estate park into a public park laid out for the community. The visual relationship with the layout of Rosendael was however retained and was even strengthened by the design. The view from the castle and park over the valley at the Rosendaal Lane was given further shape by Wattez, among other things through the creation of the still-existing water feature. From the topographic map of circa 1850 it appears that the valley with Koningsberg as a coulisse as a vista already formed part of the landscape park designed by Zocher. The Torck School built by the owner of Rosendael in 1842 for the community of Rosendael acquired an ornamental quality in connection with its prominent place in this vista. This also happened with the headmaster's residence Huis Heuveloord situated nearby on the Rosendaal Lane against the slope of Koningsberg, which is presumably built around the time of the landscape-style remodelling of Koningsberg by Wattez. The gardener's lodge at the trunk of the first pond in the landscape-style park around the castle is, like the lodge keeper's lodge and the farmhouse, both at the foot of the Smidsberg, part of the country estate. North of the farmhouse, behind the orangery, is a horse paddock located. This landscape meadow is closed off in the north by the forest that surrounds the entire park of Rosendael on the north, west and east sides. On the south side the Church Lane and the Beekhuizen road form the boundary of the historical layout.
