Omschrijving onderdeel 2: TUINAANLEG.
Inleiding
De TUINAANLEG, behorende bij het verzorgingstehuis genaamd het 'Johannahuis', is op de historische buitenplaats Rust en Vreugd ten behoeve van de regenten der Wilhelmina-Alida-Stichting tot stand gekomen. Aangezien het ontwerp voorkomt op de bouwtekening van het door S. de Clerq ontworpen gebouw is deze waarschijnlijk ook verantwoordelijk voor de tuinaanleg in een Decoratieve tuinstijl. De tuinaanleg vertoont grote overeenkomsten met die van het eveneens door De Clerq ontworpen nabijgelegen WAVO-park. Als verantwoordelijke voor de tuin wordt in dat verband dhr. Drenth genoemd en het ligt voor de hand dat hij ook hier de beplanting voor zijn rekening heeft genomen. De tuinaanleg van het binnenplein behoorde hier ook bij. Op de bouwtekeningen van De Clerq is deze te zien: aan drie zijden gemetselde taluds, van waaruit de tuin via trappen bereikbaar waren, in het midden een dwars-as, waar circelsegmenten via een trap met elkaar waren verbonden. Deze aanleg is thans gewijzigd of geëffend met aarde.
Omschrijving
Tussen de Schouwweg en het Johannahuis is een terrasaanleg met als centraal element een langgerekte waterpartij met een uitstulping in de vorm van een cirkelsegment aan de zuidoostzijde, voorzien van gemetselde keermuren. Rondom bevinden zich borders, voorzien van een wandelpad en gemetselde trappen die leiden naar de keermuur. De voor die tijd kenmerkende beplanting bevindt zich vooral aan de zuidoostzijde en bestaat ondermeer uit verschillende typen coniferen, taxus, azalea's en rododendrons. De binnentuin is gewijzigd, maar mogelijk zijn de trappen en muren nog bewaard in de grond.
Waardering
De bij het Johannahuis behorende tuinaanleg is van algemeen belang vanwege cultuurhistorische, tuinhistorische en ensemblewaarde:
- als karakteristiek voorbeeld van een tuinaanleg in Decoratieve stijl uit het eind van de jaren' 20 van de 20ste eeuw;
- door de relatie tussen huis en tuin.
De tuinaanleg is vrij gaaf wat betreft hoofdstructuur en beplanting.
