Omschrijving
Op een L-vormig grondplan ontworpen hoofdgebouw van de voormalige DIAMANTSLIJPERIJ Asscher, met vier tot vijf bouwlagen onder samenstel van zadel- en platte daken. Het gebouw is onderkelderd. Aan de westzijde wordt het gebouw afgesloten door een korte dwarsvleugel onder zadeldak met tot toren opgetrokken hogere hoekpartijen. Het langgerekte middendeel en de hogere hoekbebouwing aan de oostzijde worden met platte daken afgesloten. De gevels zijn opgebouwd uit oranje-gele verblendsteen afgewisseld met natuurstenen accenten en decoratief gebruik van rode verblendsteen in bandwerk, fries, segmentbogen boven de vensters en verspreide geometrische motieven. Trasraam in donkere verblendsteen met openingen naar het souterrain in natuurstenen kader. De gevels zijn sterk horizontaal en verticaal geleed met vensterseries. Alle vensters hebben een gemetselde benedendorpel en strek of boog en natuurstenen hoekaccenten. Aan de gevel bevinden zich natuurstenen vergaarbakken en/of spuwers. De teruggerooide voorgevel aan het open voorterrein aan de Tolstraat heeft een langgerekte middenpartij van dertien traveeën, waarin zesdelige vensters per travee, geflankeerd door twee smalle traveeën ter breedte van elk één vensteras. Boven de gemetselde, afgeschuinde gevellijst een sierlijk hek met korte gedrongen pijlers als voortzetting van de muurdammen. De hogere hoekbebouwing aan de oostzijde heeft vijf bouwlagen, waarvan de meest oostelijke travee lager is dan de travee met de hoofdingang; elke travee is drie vensterassen breed. De meervoudig gelede hoofdtoegang in rijk natuurstenen kader in de voorgevel aan de Tolstraatzijde. Hierboven een brede vensterpartij met gemetselde stijlen waarboven een tegelfries met 'DIAMANTSLIJPERIJ I.J. ASSCHER'. Hierboven een lage drievoudig gelede vensterpartij met groot segmentvormig bovenlicht. Verdere gevel met brede drievoudig gelede vensterpartijen met gemetselde stijlen en lichte togingen en vijf- of zesvoudig gelede partijen met dito stijlen en smalle vensters met tuimelraam. Op de derde verdieping aan de rechterzijde bevindt zich een loggia, waaronder natuurstenen waterspuwers. Rechte in hoogte variërende gevelbeëindiging met gemetselde borstwering en dubbele gedrongen pijlers met natuurstenen koppen. De zijgevel aan de oostzijde heeft aan de linkerzijde een zich over de bouwlagen uitstrekkende aangebouwde rechthoekige schoorsteen met opzetstuk met natuurstenen afsluiting met rookgaten. Verder smalle vensters in verschillend formaat en samenstel. De achtergevel heeft aan de rechterzijde een risalerend deel met de smalle en gekoppeld of oplopend geplaatste vensters van het trappenhuis. Aan de linkerzijde brede zesvoudig gelede vensterpartijen van souterrain tot tweede verdieping met hogere of lagere vensters met tuimelraam. Derde en vierde verdieping met drie traveeën. Eenvoudig hek/borstwering ter afsluiting.
De korte vleugel aan de westzijde bestaat grotendeels uit vier bouwlagen boven het maaiveld en heeft de vijf traveeën brede voorgevel aan de Tolstraat. De vensters hebben een enkele horizontale geleding. Op de eerste en derde verdieping zijn de drie middenvensters licht getoogd. De gevel eindigt in twee rechthoekige torenopbouwen met gemetselde open borstwering en posten met natuurstenen afdekking en waterspuwers. Hiertussen bevindt zich de topgevel met getande natuurstenen lijst en dito sierelement ter bekroning. Smalle vensters met gemetselde stijlen. Op de derde verdieping een tegeltableau met jaartal '1907' en tableaus met tegels in geometrische patronen. Op deze verdieping ook een tweetal kleine driezijdige natuurstenen balkons. De zijgevel aan de westzijde is vijf traveeën breed. De brede tripartiete vensterpartijen worden door gemetselde stijlen geleed. Rechte gevelbeëindiging met geheel links een topgevel met drievoudig opklimmend venster. De achtergevel van de vleugel is eveneens vijf traveeën breed en wordt afgesloten door een brede topgevel met drievoudig venster. De zijgevel aan de oostzijde sluit aan op de voorgevel van het middendeel van de slijperij en is op de tweede en derde verdieping vijf traveeën breed. Op de begane grond en eerste verdieping zijn er twee brede tripartiete vensterpartijden. In de oksel een secundaire toegangspartij met geleed en licht getoogd bovenlicht. Aan de linkerzijde van de gevel vormen korte gedrongen pijlers tussen afgeschuinde gemetselde lijst een voortzetting van de muurdammen uitkomend boven de gevelbeëindiging.
Interieur: Met name op de begane grond van het middendeel is een voormalige productieruimte van de slijperij in hoofdlijnen bewaard gebleven. Inwendig series vierkante pijlers (met afgeronde hoeken) van de betonnen draagconstructie; de pijlers zijn geplaatst in een stramien van circa 4 x 4 meter. Hiertussen balklagen op consoles.
Waardering
Hoofdgebouw van de voormalige diamantslijperij van Asscher van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische en industrieel-archeologische waarde. Verder van belang wegens de typologische en bouwhistorische waarde als één der laatste representanten van de grootschalige diamantfabrieken in Amsterdam gebouwd volgens de moderne inzichten van het begin van de twintigste eeuw. The facades are built up from orange-yellow facing brick alternating with natural stone accents and decorative use of red facing brick in banding, friezes, segmental arches above the windows and scattered geometric motifs.
