Omschrijving
V.m. vergaderzaal van de Theosofische Vereniging, naar ontwerp van L.C. van der Vlugt gebouwd. Het in beton uitgevoerde gebouw heeft een kwart-cirkelvormige plattegrond als gevolg waarvan de dakconstructie een vernuftig samenstel van betonnen spanten vereiste. De gebogen voorgevel is sterk gesloten van karakter en constrasteert met de open galerij onder het dak, dat daar gesteund wordt door dunne ijzeren pijlertjes. De rechte zijgevels, die in een hoek van 90 graden samenkomen, worden elk doorbroken door een grote, driehoekige raampartij, door stijlen onderverdeeld in een groot aantal smalle, rechthoekige vensters, die schuin in het muurvlak zijn geplaatst. Oorspronkelijk vertoonde het gehele exterieur een afwerking met een mengsel van zand en graniet, waardoor de voor de "harde periode" van de Nieuwe Zakelijkheid kenmerkende grauwe kleur ontstond. De voorgevel bezit thans een witte sauslaag. Inwendig loopt langs de gebogen voorgevel een balcon. Description
Formerly assembly hall of the Theosofical Society, built to the design of L.C. van der Vlugt. The building, executed in concrete, has a quarter-circle plan, as a result of which the roof truss structure required an ingenious arrangement of concrete roof trusses. The curved front facade is strongly closed in character and contrasts with the open gallery beneath the roof, which is supported there by slender iron pilasters. The straight side facades, which meet at a 90-degree angle, are each interrupted by a large, triangular window arrangement, subdivided by mullions into a large number of narrow, rectangular windows, which are set obliquely in the wall plane. Originally, the entire exterior displayed a finish with a mixture of sand and granite, which created the grey colour characteristic of the "hard period" of the Neue Sachlichkeit. The front facade now has a white rendered coat. Internally, a balcony runs along the curved front facade. The interior adaptations, which were necessary as a result of use as a cinema, have not resulted in any drastic damage to the original design. Along the Tolstraat there is a concrete site boundary with iron railings and two pillars, upon which are lanterns.
