Omschrijving

Description
Component 2
Description
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historic country estate Slangenburg. The layout of Slangenburg consists of a trapezoidal pattern of straight avenues, which came into being in 1679; the pattern is formed by four more or less parallel NW-SE running avenues, of which the Varsseveldseweg and the access avenue from the Plakdijk are the two middle ones; the moated castle lies between them with the southwestern moat arm running directly along the Varsseveldseweg; the two other, unpaved, avenues lie respectively to the NE (Schapendrift) and to the SW (Lindenlaan); the long Kasteellaan, beginning at the Brunsveldweg and running from NE to SW and directed at the front door of the castle, stands almost perpendicular to the four avenues mentioned above and forms the central axis; the Loordijk and the Holdrostweg (both unpaved) meet at an acute angle at an imaginary point - many kilometres to the southwest of the castle - and thereby give the trapezoidal shape to the terrain surrounded by the drive, the Varsseveldseweg, the Loordijk and the Holdrostweg; to the NW of and parallel to the Loordijk lies the Plakdijk, a public asphalt-surfaced road; it forms the NW boundary of the complex; to the SE and more or less parallel to the Holdrostweg runs the Abdijlaan; this is the SE boundary of the complex; the Schapensingel and the Lindenlaan form the other two boundaries with the exception of the Kasteellaan; the original planting arrangement of the avenues consists of double rows of oak in triangular spacing; at present some avenues/avenue sections have a planting of beech or lime; the spaces between the avenues consist alternately of woodland, arable land and meadows. There are four square ponds (seventeenth-century) at the crossings of the Kasteellaan with the Schapensingel and the drive; the terrain is here and there gently undulating; the meadow beside the Kasteellaan immediately to the NE of the castle has the function of a deer park; to the SE of it, in a wooded plot, lies the family burial ground (see under 5). North of the castle the contours of the seventeenth-century star wood can still be recognised. On the U-shaped island, which lies between the outer and inner moat, are located the vegetable and fruit garden surrounded by beech hedges and the very small nineteenth-century landscape park with winding paths and some fine specimen trees (tulip tree and red beeches); in the vegetable garden lies an oblong basin. The forecourt (between the two estate buildings (see below)) has a gravel surface and a central oval grass plot with box compartments and a path cross of brick pavers; in the middle stands a sundial (see under 6).
Valuation
The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT is of general importance:
- on account of its age;
- on account of the unique and well-preserved seventeenth-century avenue structure;
- on account of the ensemble values in relation to the castle;
- on account of the landscape and visual values.
