Omschrijving
Waardering
Het KASTEEL is van algemeen belang:
- vanwege de ouderdom;
- vanwege de kloeke 17e eeuwse architectuur;
- vanwege de hoge mate van oorspronkelijkheid van zowel het exterieur als het rijke interieur;

Description
Component 1
Description
KASTEEL SLANGENBURG, 17th century, belonging to the historic country estate Slangenburg. A building originally dating from the early 16th century of brick surrounded by a moat which received its present appearance in 1675 under the direction of patron Frederik Johan van Baer. The castle built on a symmetrical U-shaped floor plan has two storeys on a high basement storey; hipped roofs with grey tiles and roof dormers with curved pediments; right wing with 3 roof chimneys, left wing with 2; cornice lines between the storeys; at both outer corners of the central wing a round tower of three storeys on basement under an octagonal helm roof with slates, crowned with a lantern and a weathervane, one depicting a cockerel, the other a putto with a sash; entrance section with sandstone steps of 4 treads and a double door with semi-circular fanlight in rusticated surround in 16th-century forms; exterior facades on the courtyard side with grisaille paintings; the rear facade (south-west) has 7 bays, the front facade 3 and the gable ends of the projecting wings 2 bays; all facades with multi-pane windows.
Internally of importance among other things: the 17th-century spatial layout with an early 16th-century core; the rich interior decoration, 17th and 18th centuries with wall and ceiling paintings, including mythological representations by the hand of painter Gerard Hoet (1648-1733); fireplaces and ceilings, painted wallpapers, wainscotting and doors decorated with woodcarving. The stucco ceilings are directly modelled and built up from lime mortars without aggregate, on reeds. The decorative motifs of the surrounds are often linked to the paintings. Fine ensembles are formed among others by the vestibule, great hall, playroom, Dido room, reception room, music room and the rooms of Eternal and Frivolous Love.
Valuation
The CASTLE is of general importance:
- because of its age;
- because of its robust 17th-century architecture;
- because of the high degree of originality of both the exterior and the rich interior;
- as visual and physical centre of the layout/the lane pattern.
