Inleiding

Introduction

The SLUISWACHTERSHUISJE (lock keeper's cottage) belonging to the 'Buma' pumping station complex was built in 1939-1941 on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat, Department of State Service Ijsselmeer Polders (R.IJ.P.). The design for the lock keeper's cottage, erected in a functionalist style, as well as the designs for the pumping station and other complex components were by engineer D. Roosenburg (The Hague). Responsible for the construction of the complex was the Department of Zuiderzee Works, Northern Polder Works division. The finishing of the lock keeper's cottage, located at the upper head of the lock, opposite the sheet pile shed, and the other buildings was done in 1940 by the firm Rietveld & Verdoorn's Contracting Company from Papendrecht. The lock became available for shipping from 10 November 1940.

Description

From a rectangular floor plan, the lock keeper's cottage is constructed in brick above a concrete substructure. The cottage stands under an improved Dutch tile-covered, projecting gabled roof, the ridge of which is longer than the roof eaves and forms generous overhangs on the gable ends. The side of the concrete substructure facing the polder contains a door with sidelights on either side. The rear side is more at dike level, where the substructure shows only a small part of the facade. The substructure is blind on the left gable end. The other end is largely covered by a staircase. The masonry superstructure has on the polder side a broad, bay-like window arrangement that runs around the corner and also covers the right gable end (lock side) and part of the rear. The window arrangement provides extensive visibility and is primarily oriented towards the lock. The window arrangement is fitted with obliquely placed windows under lean-to roofs connected to the facade. The right part of the rear facade contains a door underneath a roll moulding and a round window with wooden frame. The recessed left part contains part of the window arrangement running around the corners. The left gable end contains three narrow windows positioned between roll moulding and concrete underdorsels.
